How to Make Fork Pom Poms

It has been a while now since we made these super cute and simple little Fork Pom Poms. We LOVE pom poms in our house (we have so many Pom Pom Crafts & Ideas for you) and found that making pom poms with forks was super fun and super quick!

How to make a Pom Pom with a Fork!

I love trying out different ways to make them and seeing which way is easiest for the kids (see our full list how to make a pom pom techniques here – who knew you could make pom poms in so many different ways!).

I confess for KIDS a pom pom maker really is great, though a rectangular piece of card, as does traditional cardboard pom pom maker method. Today, I want to share with you the fork pom pom making method – you can actually use your fingers to do this method too to make larger pom poms. So these can be easily made any time, any place!

Supplies needed for your fork pom pom!

How To Make a PomPom using a Fork
  • yarn of choice (thicker yarn and “fluffy wool” is best.. cotton yarn is quite stiff and will not tie of as nicely)
  • optional – some thread or baker’s twine if your wool is soft and breaks easily
  • a fork (of course!)*
  • sharp scissors makes all the difference!

The different sizes of fork will result in different diameter pom poms. A serving fork will give you a bigger pom pom and a desert fork will give you small pom poms! Experiment and have fun!

This video tutorial is also available on my YouTube channel if you prefer that!

How to Make Fork Pom Poms:

NOTE: I have updated this post and realised that the photo steps are SLIGHTLY different to the video process. I actually prefer the video process (the placement of the knot is slightly different) I will highlight this in written description below! I made the video and the step photos at a different point in time!

How To Make PomPoms Using a Fork

To make your fork pom poms… all you need is a fork (really?!), some yarn (you never!) and a sharp pair of scissors. A dinner fork is great! But you can (as always) experiment with different sized forks and make mini pom poms with a small desert fork!

Cut a piece of yarn and place along your fork – I added some bakers twine 1) so you can see it better and 2) because the wool I used is very soft and when tying a knot breaks easily. This will be the piece you use to knot your fork pom pom securely!

NOTE: in the video you will see that I place the bakers twine/ Yarn BETWEEN the forks prongs. So it hangs down. And allows for wrapping over both sides of the pompom – giving you flufflier but also small pom pom!

Now start wrapping yarn around the fork. About an inch wide and make it a nice wad of yarn – especially if you want a nice fully pompom. Take care to leave your tidying piece (ie. the bakers twine free)

NOTE: as mentioned, in the video the you will see the bakers twine between the fork prongs and hanging down!

Now tie your bakers twine as tightly as possible to create a secure fork pom pom.

NOTE: in the video, when you tie the bakers twine around the wad of yarn, it goes over BOTH SIDES. Creating loops on either side of your knot.

Now you need to cut all the loops. Start to cut along the OPPOSITE side of your knot.

NOTE: when using the video method, you have loops on both side of the knot which you cut in turn. Thinking about this.. the video method is probably good for older kids and this photo method better for younger kids, as easier to cut. But it will also need more trimming in the next step!
