How First Aid Savvy Are You?!

Some of you may know, that I am a mother to a 5yr old and 7yr old (if you have been reading this site since it started – gulp! YES! Long gone are the days of baby + toddler life!!!! How time flies!). The last few years have been wonderful and challenging (of course!), with the kids learning to crawl, walk, talk, cycle, climb trees, do cartwheels etc. With my kids and their friends, in and out of the house and getting up to all sorts of antics.

The thing that I (!) as a parent find most distressing however, is when my child hurts themselves and unfortunately this has happened many a time over the year.

Do YOU know what to do in an emergency?

I believe that, First aid is an essential life skill every parent should be learn and that it should an integral part of any parent preparation classes.

My daughter, being younger, but always looking up to her older brother, fell down the stairs probably 4 times –  trying to walk down them before she was ready to stop climbing down them. I cannot tell you that terrifying sound of a child tumbling down the stairs, when you know, you can do NOTHING to stop it. You stand stock still, waiting for the thump and praying for a loud, piercing cry to start – the sign that mostly means your child will be ok. At which point you rush over and check for blood or broken bones. Those seconds are hideous. You just don’t know what will happen. Will your child get knocked out? Will they land on their head? Or worse… (I don’t even like THINKING back to these instances, yet alone living through them).

There are only TWO things you can do for them:

1) Be there for them. Hold them and cuddle them.

2) Be WELL INFORMED about FIRST AID.

I know that I cope better in these situations, when I know what to do.

What DO you do in those instances?! Do YOU KNOW?!

Bumped Head? What do you do?

Broken Arm? What next?

These images are from a FANTASTIC and FREE app from the British Red Cross. Within a second I have the information I need to hand.. (I am rather impressed with the Emergency button, that quickly and easily helps you navigate to a common injury section, provides you with essential first aid steps + a SUPER SHORT video SHOWING you exactly what you need to do!).

NOSEBLEEDS – we have had a few of these.. what to do? Aunt Hetty says, put your head back. Grandpa says lean forwards. Which one is? Should it stop after 3 or 5minutes? What am I doing wrong…?! Should I worry?!

Quick, handy, direct advice (LOVE THE TIMER, it is SO EASY to forget to check the time in an emergency and know how long something has been going on for). The video, again, is quick and short and it is so much easier to SEE what you need to do, rather than interpret the text.

I love the TEST section – test yourself every few months – do you still remember the basics?

Add the TOOLKIT section – information about you and your child.
