Gruffalo Felt Toy/ Ornament

| | | | |

I love it when friends share their crafty makes with me.. such as this adorable Felt Gruffalo. My friend showed it to me and said “It isn’t very good”.. I said “What?!?! Not good? He is LOVELY”! She had made this felt Gruffalo for the Christmas tree for their first Christmas here in the UK. I think he is wonderful. And I think this Gruffalo Ornament would also be a lovely toy all year round – or perfect for a Gruffalo story prop! Don’t you think. I have shared a basic Gruffalo pattern for you below and some step by step instructions for you to follow! You can resize the pattern to make your Gruffalo bigger or smaller to suit your needs.

As a note.. as my friend made this “first” and “then” showed me, I don’t have ACTUAL step by step photos. But she described her “process for me” and I have added close ups of the details to share with you!!

The Gruffalo - a craft for story telling or as a Christmas tree ornament

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldso (US/ UK)

But who is this creature with terrible claws
And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws?
He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes,
And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose.
His eyes are orange, his tongue is black,
He has purple prickles all over his back.

Felt Gruffalo Ornaments – Materials Needed:

  • Felt in a variety of colours – brown (2 pieces of 16x16cm),  scraps of green, orange, purple, black and white (stock up – US/ UK – affiliate)
  • Brown thread
  • White thread
  • Grey/ green thread (knobbly knees)
  • Cotton wool for stuffing
  • Gruffalo Template (enter $0 at check out)

How To Make Your Felt Gruffalo Ornaments:

First of all cut out your felt pieces – you will need two for the main body. All other pieces are single bits. The template does not show these in detail.. just cut out triangles and squares etc. They really don’t need to be perfect!

Start at the top and work your way down.

For whiskers and mouth use white thread. Add some brown stitching to secure the tongue.

Add prickles along the back as well as the tail.

NOT SHOWN: you can also add a loop made from felt or ribbon for hanging!

Sew on some knobbly knees and the claws.

Now put your two main pieces of felt together and sew all the way round… leave a small gap and stuff with toy stuff (you always need more than you think!).. then sew shut!Felt Gruffalo Craft - gorgeous story telling prop and Christmas ornament
