How to make a Schultüte (Bastelanleitung)

Today, I will be a little “daring” and write this post in German AND English.. mainly because “Schultüten” are essentially a Germanic thing – but they are increasinly becoming popular or known as “Kinder Cones” or Kindercones in other parts of the world. Just in case you are, I will write in both languages.

Firstly.. what is a Schultüte or a Kindercone? In Germany and Austria, children starting school for the first time, receive a Schultüte, filled with treats and stationary to “sweeten” the first day of school. Awe, lovely little tradition, no? I still remember the one I received, so I really wanted to repeat the experience for my children. As I live in the UK, I decided that I would have to make my own! So here is a “How to Make Your Own “Schultüte” or Wie bastelt man eine Schultüte?

DIY Schultuete (Kinder Cone) Olaf

Two years later and it is Pip Squeak’s turn. I made the Schultuete in exactly the same way…. just with blue paper and printed out an Olaf for it. I think I got a bit carried away and it ended up quite, ahem, BIG!!!!

Ich habe also 11 Seiten zusammen geklebt. Unsere Schultuete is riesig. Glaube 9 haetten gereicht!

To make a Schultüte / Kinder Cone – you will need:

  • 11 sheets of colourful A4 card,
  • cellotape,
  • PVA glue,
  • 2 x A3 pieces of tissue paper,
  • ribbon,
  • scissors,
  • pencil and string

You could also try using some wallpaper left overs, as a reader suggested to me on Google+. The main thing is, that you need a very LARGE piece of stiff paper or card, which isn’t that easily found in ordinary stores. This is why I sellotaped several sheets together. Thought it looked nice!

1) Cellotape your 11 sheets of card carefully together. This will become the inside of your Schultüte / Kindercone

2) Using your pencil and string like a compass (tie your string to your pencil. Hold one end to the bottom left hand corner and draw a quarter of a circle across the rest). This will give you the basic shape that you will need for your Schultüte / Kindercone!
