MAKE & PLAY: HEART SHAPED WINGS

We are SO pleased to be here with Maggy and you for 31 DAYS OF LOVE!  We are a Canadian family of five with a background in digital media, art and education and we like to collaborate on projects with our three children.  We often use nature, recyclables and children’s literature as a starting point.  This is a seasonal twist on fairy wings for our little neighbourhood friend.  Many of our projects are ones that children can “make and play” with and Valentine’s day is the perfect time to do this and give a set to a friend!

Purpose

  • Recognizing symbols of various cultural celebrations.
  • Thinking of others.
  • Re-imagining items from the recycling bin.
  • Experimenting with different creating materials.

  • Smock
  • Craft tray

Safety Notes

  • We suggest that you wear a smock and use a craft tray to protect your clothing and surfaces.
  • Use scissors and a glue gun with care and direct adult supervision.  A craft knife should only be used by an adult.
  • Small items such as bobby pins and beads can be choking hazards, therefore be sure to keep them out of the reach of children ages 0-3 years of age or those that tend to put things into their mouths.

How to make Valentine’s Heart Wings – Step by Step Instructions

  • Sketch out a large heart about the size of the child’s back who is going to wear the wings.  Have an adult cut out the heart, using a craft knife.

  • Don your smock.  Chose the colours that you would like for your wings and put the watercolour paint into the containers.  The more you dilute the paint, the more soft the colours will be.  Vibrant colours are achieved by less dilution, so we went somewhere in between!   Dip your coffee filters into your colours (you can fold them to make it easier for little hands!).  We find the quickest way to dry coffee filters is to place them on a cooling rack.  Allow them to dry overnight.
  • We then experimented with the placement of the filters- you could go with random arrangements or a pattern.  We find this planning/experimenting step is important in projects with children, so that they can better achieve the vision that have in their imagination and manipulate it, prior to it being affixed into place.
  • We glued the layers of filters onto the side that would face outwards first, starting at the bottom, overlapping them, going slightly off the edges.  Once this was done we flipped the wings over and glued the edges of the filters that were outside of perimeter over.  Do this by putting down the glue line, gently pulling the filter edge up and over, putting it into the glue. This creates a finished edge.
  • Repeat the same process on the other side of the wings.  Once the filters were in place, we then flipped the wings over and carefully trimmed the edges.
  • We then glued a bobby pin into place to attach the wings to one’s shirt.  Next time we do this project we would try placing the pins on the two peaks of the hearts, using smaller ones. To hold the pin firmly in place, we put a bit of felt over the length of the pin, gluing the entire piece down.
