Kids Get Crafty – Pirates and Thank Yous

| |

Hello! It is haaarr-haaarrr pirrrate time at Red Ted HQ! Red Ted was invited to a pirate party earlier in the week. He isn’t very good yet at “dressing up”, but did wear as skull and cross bones t-shirt. The party was fabulous and we wanted to send a little “Thank You” note in the post.. so we got crafty and made some pirate cards! Yay! Needless to say, these would make great birthday party invites too!

Don’t forget that this is also a link up party/ blog hop for all craftiness with and for children! Do take part. Do be inspired! Link up at bottom of post! Hooray!

Old posts welcomed. Grab a button and add it to your post or side bar. Please do NOT post things for sale or Giveaways!

Our Book

Mungo and the Picture Book Pirates Mungo and the Picture Book Pirates, by By Timothy Knapman. Red Ted actually first got in pirates through a colouring book he was given by a friend, but I do like to get him a good story to any topic that is currently “big” in his life. And pirates it is! We were recommended Mungo and the Picture Book Pirates and a cute book it is: Mungo likes reading bedtime stories with his mother. Over and over again. At the moment his favourite book is about pirates. And his mother has to read it rather often! And this is what happens when you read a book toooo often: the hero, gets tired and decides to go on holiday. Oh no, what is going to happen to the kind captain and the maiden in distress now that the hero is gone? The pirates are going to get them and win. No no no. This cannot happen. So Mungo is forced to delve into the book himself and help out. Needless to say, he saves the day and even gets a medal for it. It is a cute and not too scary book about pirates (they pirates just do lots of looting and hideously bad singing). I like how it “stretches” the imagination a little – and makes little boys and girls think about the stories and what may be happening after you have finished reading with them.  Red Ted likes it, because you get “two stories for one”…

The Craft

You will find that this is once again beyond easy. I made this with a 3 year old, but you can make it a craft for older kids, by helping them less…

Materials: White paper, Coloured Paper/ Card, Scissors, Glue, black pen/ crayon

1) Cut out a skull shape and some bones. If you are working with older children either draw a rough outline for them to cut out or get them to draw the line themselves. I am sure a 8-9yrs old would still like making these.

2) Glue onto card (we referred to our party pirate balloon as to where things need to go – I find Red Ted is very good if he has something to guide him (a book, a balloon, a drawing))

3) Draw eyes and mouth/ teeth (Red Ted pointed on the first set where I should draw the eyes, but we made more later and he drew them in himself. Result!)

4) Write your Thank Yous/ Party Invites and post!

FINISH!

Now, I have to confess. One card was supposed to go to the Birthday Boy (which it did) and one to one of the other mums that had been particularly nice to Red Ted at the party. But in the end Red Ted INSISTED on, ahem, sending it to HIMSELF. Ooops. So much for Thank Yous. So we made another set and will be sending one to said mum and Grandpa!
