Creative ideas for a play area that you can easily make yourself

I do believe that children are inherently creative and imaginative, and there’s no better way to encourage this than by providing them with a play area that stimulates their imagination. Whether you live in a large or small space, there are lots of ways you can create a play area that your children will love. Let’s explore some creative ideas for a play area that you can easily make yourself – my favourite kind of creativity!

Build a play kitchen

Play kitchens are a long time favourite among children. The kids used to LOVE LOVE LOVE the one that we had. It allowed my kids to mimic real life and engage in imaginative play. You don’t need to break the bank to provide your child with a play kitchen. With a little creativity, you can create a DIY play kitchen using items you already have at home. Old furniture, cardboard boxes, and unused kitchen utensils can be transformed into a fun and engaging play kitchen. To make it even more special, you can involve your child in the design and decoration process. We LOVE making lost of DIY Food to play with too.. you can try out Crochet Food Projects, Knitted Food Projects, or have a go at sewing felt strawberries (and donuts).

Create a reading nook

Fostering a love for reading in your child is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Why not create a cozy reading nook in your child’s play area? All you need is a comfortable chair, some soft pillows, a blanket, and of course, books. You can make a bookshelf from a simple wooden crate or even use a spice rack. Make the reading nook inviting by adding fairy lights or a canopy. A reading nook not only encourages reading but also provides a quiet space for your child to relax and unwind. You can always encourage extra reading, by making some super duper cute Bookmarks first! You can go as simple as cutting up old greating cards, or choose from our many Corner Bookmark Designs!

Look for a source of inspiration

The key for any DIY project is to come up with a good design and “look” for what you are making. Many moons ago, when we made our Cardboard Pirate ship, we modelled it on a toy the kids had received as a gift. This applies to all bigger projects! So if you want to have a go at making a toy kitchen or dolls house and you’re looking for more creative ideas, Petite Amélie is a great source of inspiration. This brand designs timeless children’s furniture and toys that inspire children’s imagination. Their products are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, making them a beautiful addition to any play area. By browsing their collection, you can gain inspiration for your own DIY projects. You might not be able to replicate their designs exactly, but they can certainly spark some ideas that you can adapt to your own space and resources.

Set up a craft station

Children love to create, and having their own craft station can provide hours of fun. A craft station does not require a lot of space. A small table and chair, some storage boxes for craft supplies, and a display area for your child’s artwork are all you need. Remember to make it colourful and inviting. Having their own dedicated space for crafting can make your child feel special and encourage their creativity. Just remember: glitter and paints should only come out under supervision. Ha!

An outdoor play area

If you have outdoor space, why not transform it into an exciting play area? From a simple sandbox to a DIY treehouse… I have ALWAYS fancied a Water Wall. They are so fun and they keep the kids busy for hours come summer. You can even create a nature exploration area with a magnifying glass, bug catcher, and a guide to local plants and insects (use our FREE Bug themed Fortune Teller to explore more). Outdoor play is not only fun but also beneficial for children’s physical health and development.

Anyway.. I hope you have found some inspiration today! And that you are inclined to GET CRAFTY with some boxes today! Happy Making!
