Here in the UK, spring is in the air. The first snowdrops and crocuses are showing.. and we can finally feel confident that spring is SLOWLY coming. With that, I revisit the wonderful Best Makes Ever! series that Arty Crafty Kids and produced for Sky Kids during lockdown and share with you our every day materials playful crafts and art projects. Today: the Egg Carton Butterfly Puppet. Well.. not just butterflies.. but Egg Carton Caterpillars and Butterfly Finger Puppets! Too cute! Let’s make some cute Butterfly Crafts today!
Easy Butterfly Puppet Craft for Kids
Butterflies Finger Puppets – Supplies needed:
The ethos of the original Best Makes Ever series was all around accessiblity of supplies – aiming to use relatively inexpensive or easy to get hold of craft materials. So making these Egg Carton Butterflies, really required very little!
- Egg Cartons
- Scissors
- Pens for coloring*
- Glue stick
*I do love that these caterpillars and butterflies are decorated with just felt tip pens – mainly because this makes it a relatively low mess craft as well! Of course you can use paints and other items to decorate. But it is surprising how far you get with just felt tip pens!

How to Make Egg Carton Butterflies for Spring & Summer Crafting
We begin by shaping the egg carton. One 6 eggs carton, will make one butterfly and one caterpillar.
Shape the egg carton
You will need one “flat” bit for the Butterfly wings, using the “roof” of the egg carton with labels removed. And the two “humps” of the egg carton for the bodies. One for the Butterfly Body and one for the Caterpillar. If working with younger kids, you may wish to do the cutting for them.
Draw the butterfly wings outline
Position one of your bodies on the rectangular card to get a rough idea of where the butterfly body will go. Sketch aroundi t and add some wings in pencil.
With a black pen add darker outlines.
Color in the Butterfly Puppet
Now have fun with doodle patterns on the butterfly wings and color these in.
Use egg cartons scraps to also draw some antennae.
And give the butterfly a black body.
Draw some googley eyes. You will need two sets. One for the butterfly and one for the caterpillar.
Finishing coloring in the caterpillar body
The butterfly gets the really bright wings, so the caterpillar gets to have a super fun and colorful body. We did stripes here, but you can make your caterpillar spotty or any with any patterns that you wish!
Final Assembly of the Egg Carton Puppets
Neatly cut out the butterfly wings.
Glue on the butterfly body and antennae (ideally glue the antennae between the body and wigs to secure it).
Finally glue on your little handmade googly eyes.
Ta-daaaa your egg carton butterfly and caterpillar finger puppets are finished!
