Free Crochet Pattern: Baby Booties – Beginners flower and bow
This is an easy and great pair of booties with two different looks, a great free crochet pattern for the very beginner, this photo tutorial will help you to make this basic design step by step, you can then customise the booties for boys with a little dinosaur applique? maybe?, keep an eye on my Facebook page as I will start a new library of applique?s to decorate anything from booties to kids clothing.
Please note: These booties have small parts and as they are destine for young babies please please be sure you sew every element very robustly and unsure that no parts will come loose, babies would love to play with their feet and anything lovely on them!
So… here we go, let’s get started on this cute crochet pattern for babies!
Sizes:
0 – 6 months (3.5”) 6 – 12 months (4”) Skill Level: Easy/beginner
Please note this crochet pattern is written in Standard American Terms.
Abbreviations
ch = chain sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet sl st = slip stich 2sctogether = make 2sc together to reduce by one st.
Crochet Pattern Materials and notions:
- 40 gr of DK weight or light worsted weight yarn in white/pink for the booties, and just scraps of yarn for the flower applique?, I have used
- Mondial merino sport for the booties (100% merino wool, but you could
- use cotton or bamboo if you fancy.
- Size hook E (3.5 mm)
- Tapestry needle
- 2 tinny buttons
Gauge:
4sc and 5 rows = 1 inch
Booties:
0 – 6 months – 3.5” (9cm)
Sole:
Round 1: Chain15, on third ch from the hook, make 1hdc, make 1hdc in each of the next 11chains and 6 hdc in the last chain, you are now working on the back loops of the chains, make 1hdc in each of the next 11chs and 2hdc on the last one, sl st to the first st, you should now have 32 sts. (note the ch2 at the beginning of you round, before you insert your hook on the 3rd chain counts as the first st, this goes for the next rounds too, the ch2 at the beginning of the round count as the first st.)
Round 2: ch2, make 1hdc in the same st, 2hdc in the next st, make 1hdc in each of the next 11 sts, and make 2hdc in each of the next 6 sts, 1hdc in each of the next 11 sts, and 2hdc in the last two sts. (42 sts in total)
Round 3: ch2, make 1hdc in the same st, 1hdc in each of the next 14 st, *2hdc in the next 1hdc in the next, repeat from * 5 more times, make 1hdc in each of the next 14sts, make 2hdc on the last st, sl st to the first st. (50 sts) We are going to start the upper now, please note that the ch1 at the beginning of the rounds don’t count as the first st.
Round 4: working only on the back loops, ch1 make 1sc on the same st, make 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st. (50 sts)
Rounds 5 – 7: ch1, make 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st (50 sts)
Round 8: ch1, make 1sc in the same st, make 1sc in each of the next 14 sts, * decrease 2sctogether, 1sc in the next st, repeat from * 7 more times, make 1sc in each of the next 11sts, sl st to the first st. (42 sts) (the following pictures shows how to decrease 2sctogether, inset the hook and draw the yarn, do that in the next st and then yarn over and close all the loops on the hook, leaving only one loop)
Round 9: ch1, make 1sc in the same st, 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st, (42 sts)
Round 10: ch1, make 1sc in each of the next 14 sts, decrease 2sctogether 8 times, make 1sc in each of the next 11 sts, sl st to the first st (34 sts)
Change the colour to green, to make a seamless joint, insert the hook and pull the new yarn through and carry on working with the new yarn for this crochet pattern.
Round 11: working really loosely, make 1sl st in each st, and fasten off
6 – 12 months – 4” (10cm)
Sole
Round 1: Chain18, on third ch from the hook, make 1hdc, make 1hdc in each of the next 14chains and 6 hdc in the last chain, you are now working on the back loops of the chains, make 1hdc in each of the next 14chs and 2hdc on the last one, sl st to the first st, you should now have 38 sts. (note the ch2 at the beginning of you round, before you insert your hook on the 3rd chain counts as the first st, this goes for the next rounds too, the ch2 at the beginning of the round count as the first st.)
Round 2: ch2, make 1hdc in the same st, 2hdc in the next st, make 1hdc in each of the next 14 sts, and make 2hdc in each of the next 6 sts, 1hdc in each of the next 14 sts, and 2hdc in the last two sts. (48 sts in total) Round 3: ch2, make 1hdc in the same st, 1hdc in each of the next 17 st, *2hdc in the next 1hdc in the next, repeat from * 5 more times, make 1hdc in each of the next 17sts, make 2hdc on the last st, sl st to the first st. (56 sts) We are going to start the upper now, please note that the ch1 at the beginning of the rounds don’t count as the first st. Round 4: working only on the back loops, ch1 make 1sc on the same st, make 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st. (56 sts) Rounds 5 – 7: ch1, make 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st (56 sts) Round 8: ch1, make 1sc in the same st, make 1sc in each of the next 14 sts, * decrease 2sctogether, 1sc in the next st, repeat from * 8 more times, make 1sc in each of the next 14sts, sl st to the first st. (47 sts) (please refer to the pictures above about decreasing 2sctogether) Round 9: ch1, make 1sc in the same st, 1sc in each st all around, sl st to the first st, (42 sts) Round 10: ch1, make 1sc in each of the next 14 sts, decrease 2sctogether 8 times, make 1sc in each of the next 11 sts, sl st to the first st (38 sts) Round 11: working really loosely, make 1sl st in each st, and fasten off
Flower Applique?
Pattern note: We will be making the parts of the applique? in a continuous round so at the end of the round just put a marker and carry on with then next round. Make three different colour circles and then sew them together by the center, I have made the pink one: Round 1: ch2, make 6sc on the second ch from the hook Round 2: make 2sc in each st. Round 3: *make 1sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round. Round 4: *make 1sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round. Round 5: *make 1sc in the next 3st, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round, make a sl st in the next st. Fasten off For the purple circle:
Round 1: ch2, make 6sc on the second ch from the hook Round 2: make 2sc in each st. Round 3: *make 1sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round. Round 4: *make 1sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round, make a sl st in the next st. Fasten off For the green circle: Round 1: ch2, make 6sc on the second ch from the hook Round 2: make 2sc in each st. Round 3: *make 1sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st, repeat from * till end of round, make a sl st in the next st. Fasten off Put the circles on top of each other and sew them together then, sew it to the booty.
Pink booties strap
With green ch13, make a sl st on the 6th ch from the hook, make a 1sc in the rest of the chains, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the strap to the booty, place the straps on the booty and sew the button on the opposite side.
Finishing the booties
Weave in all the ends, and finished each look as described above. You are done! Two looks one pattern! Isn’t this crochet pattern simply the cutest?!
