The great thing about this heart craft, is that you can adapt it for the different age groups – for younger kids, you can do the cutting of the smaller hearts – but let them practice cutting out the large heart for the lion’s head. This is great for their fine motor skills and scissor handling skills.
Older kids can cut out all the shapes themselves. And you can also get them to turn this heart lion craft into a Valentine’s Day Card (fold your orange paper and aligne the base heard to the edge of the fold, so you get two hards connected on the edge). You can then have some fun with Lion Puns on the inside of the card (see below for some Lion Valentine’s Day Puns).

Heart Shaped Lion Face- Valentine’s Day Craft
This heart-shaped lion face is a fun way for kids to celebrate Valentine’s Day! Making animals out of hearts is a creative way to work with shapes and decorating them is a lot of fun. This idea was inspired by one of my favorite kid’s Valentine’s books- ‘My Heart is like a Zoo,’. It’s a rhyming story about animals and the illustrations are all of the animals made out of heart shapes! It’d be fun to read while working on this craft.
I used my free printable heart template set for this craft and it made it really easy. The template comes with several sizes of hearts as a free download. You can use them as coloring pages too.

What is a heart shaped craft?
This is a super simple project that kids of almost any age can help with. Basically it’s using one shape to make something different, in this case an adorable lion! Pre-schoolers can help with the glueing and decorating and older kids can probably do this one on their own. It’s great for working on scissor skills, learning about shapes, and how those shapes can work together.
Why kids love making animal crafts/ lion hearts
- Animals are fun to make and practice how they sound, what they can look like and for Valentine’s Day there are a lot of great puns that go with each shape!
- These can double as cards that they can give to their friends or family- just add a ‘LION’ pun and they’ll love it!
Some Lion Puns for you:
Here are some cute lion puns you can add to your cards
- “I’m not LION, you’re a great friend” is a simple and easy one to use! (And of course you can add any message, such as “you’re cute” or “I love you” etc etc”
- I am WILD abou you!
- To my MANE man.
- Dad, you are the Mane Man!
- You’re ext-ROAR-dinary
- You are ROAR-some!

How to Make it/Tips
- Start by printing out your template and cutting out your heart shapes. You can customize your lion but if you want to follow mine you’ll need one large heart, one medium heart, and 3 small hearts. You can make extra small hearts too for the inside of the ears, or color those in if so desired.

Turn your medium heart upside down and glue it onto your large heart creating the face shape of the lion.

Add your ears and nose by glueing on your small pink hearts to the large orange heart.

Using a marker add eyes, a mouth and any other details like whiskers you’d like.

You could turn this into a card by glueing another piece of cardstock to the back. Or you could add your pun to the back of the lion!
