Naomi Crochet Doll with Curly Hair
Today we share Craft Alotl’s Naomi Crochet Doll. Naomi comes with gorgeous crochet curly hair. We love how cute it looks. Naomi is part of the “Ellie & Friends” crochet doll series. They are all based on the same basic doll shape – which means you can mix and match their outfits! Naomi was inspired by Craft Alotl’s VERY FIRST crochet doll. She gifted one when she was about 4 years old and ADORED it. It had the cutest curly hair and adorable little dress. A few years later, she in turn gifted it to a friend (she couldn’t resist giving all her stuff away at that age).. and now sometimes still misses this cute little doll! So it was time to make her own. Naomi – a tribute to the very first crochet doll Craft Alot received!!

Slip stitch
Supplies needed to make this curly haired crochet doll
- 2mm crochet hook
- Ricorumi DK , 100% cotton crochet yarn (you can use 3-4mm hooks for this yarn too, you will get a bigger doll). You will need a skin tone of choice, a hair color of choice, two colors for the dress (unless you replace the belt and hair bands with ribbons)
- 6mm safety eye (larger if using larger hooks), doll stuffing
- This doll is 15.5cm/ 6inch tall as our crochet is a little tighter than normal. Your doll will end up a little bigger.
Begin with the doll’s legs:
01: 6 sc into mc [6]
02: (1 sc, inc) x3 [9]
03-08: 9sc [9]
Stuff lightly
09: (2 sc, dec) x2, sc [7]
10 – 14: 7sc [7]
15: (1sc, inc) x3, sc [10]
Fasten off for leg 1. Make leg 2 but keep the yarn attached
Make the crochet doll’s body
16: (join both legs) 20 sc [20]
17: (4sc, inc) x4 [24]
18 – 23: 24 sc [24]
24: (4 sc, dec) x4 [20]
25: 20 sc [20]
26: (3 sc, dec) x4 [16]
27: (2sc, dec) x4 [12]
Finish stuffing the body
Make the doll’s head
28: (1sc, inc) x6 [18]
29: (2 sc, inc) x6 [24]
30: (3sc, inc) x6 [30]
31: (4sc, inc) x6 [36]
32 – 37: 36 sc
Place eyes between row 33 and 34 with a gap of 6 stitches
38: (4sc, dec) x6 [30]
39: (3sc, dec) x6 [24]
40: (2sc, dec) x6 [18]
Begin stuffing the head
41: (sc, dec) x6 [12]
42: 6 dec [6]
Finish stuffing the head
Fasten off and seal up the hole
Embroider your doll’s eyelashes
Sew a line three stitches long from the eye. Sew a diagonal line, one stitch long from the eye.
Doll’s arms (crochet two)
01: 6 sc into mc [6]
02: (2sc, inc) x2 [8]
03 – 05: 8 sc [8]
06: (2 sc, dec) x2 [6]
07 – 12: 6 sc [6]
Fasten off and leave string tail for sewing.
Sew arms between rows 26 and 27 of body, keep them around 6-7 stitches apart.
Curly Crochet Hair
You will crochet the hair directly onto the head. The hair is made in four sections.
Working on round 35.
Starting one stitch away from an eye. Slip stitch, Ch 9, skip first stitch, turn, 8 inc [16]
(Skip 1 stitch, slip stitch, ch 9, skip first stitch & turn, 8 inc) x 13 – depending on your crochet, you may have to do it more or less times, but you have to finish crocheting when you come to the side of the 2nd eye.
Fasten off.
Working on round 38, slip stitch, ch 11, skip 1st stitch & turn, 10 inc [20]
(Skip 1 stitch, slip stitch, ch 11, skip first stitch & turn, 10 inc) x 17 – depending on your crochet, you may have to do it more or less times, but make sure you have done a whole round of the head.
Fasten off.
Working on round 40, slip stitch, ch 13, skip 1st stitch & turn, 12 inc [24]
(Skip 1 stitch, slip stitch, ch 13, skip first stitch & turn, 12 inc) x 9 – depending on your crochet, you may have to do it more or less times, but make sure you have done a whole round of the head.
Fasten off.
Working on round 42, slip stitch, ch 15, skip 1st stitch & turn, 14 inc [28]
(slip stitch, ch 15, 14 inc) x 5
You may have to do it more or less times, but make sure you have done a whole round of the head.
Fasten off.
Head band for the afro crochet hair
(you don’t need the headband, it just connects the hair to the dress color scheme wise, the curly hair looks great without it too)
01: ch 40 [40]
02: Skip 2 stitches, 38 dc [38]
Make the doll’s dress
01: Ch 31 [31]
02: Skip 1st Stitch & Turn, 6 sc, ch 4, skip 6 stitches, 7 sc, ch 4, skip 6 stitches, 6 sc [27]
03: ch 1 & turn, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, 4 sc (in the ch 4 made last round), 3 sc, inc, 3 sc, 4 sc (in the ch 4 made in last round), 2 sc, inc 3 sc [30]
04 – 05: ch 1 & turn, 30 sc [30]
06: ch 2 & turn, 30 dc [30]
07: start working in rounds, slip stitch, ch 2, 30 dc [30]
08 – 10: slip stitch, ch 2, 29 hdc [30]
Fasten off.
Belt
You can crochet the belt or use a ribbon if you wish
Ch 80 [80]
Tie the belt around the dress once it is on the doll and make a bow at the back.
