Newspaper Heart Garland for Valentine
Oh we are VERY excited about today’s 31 Days of Love Guest post! We love a good Newspaper Craft Idea and today, Nadia from Teach Me Mommy is sharing her wonderful and yet oh so simple Newspaper Heart Garland! Shabby chic at its best. I think it looks absolutely DARLING! If you are looking for Valentines Day Decorations, this is perfect!
I am excited to share this super simple, but lovely garland idea using a humble material called newspaper as part of the 31 Days of Love series.
Garlands, or buntings, are great to make for all kinds of occasions. This newspaper heart garland is perfect for Valentine’s Day or just to pretty up a girls room. Make a miniature version and use on cards or across a paper/gift bag or wrapped gift!
Newspaper Heart Garland – Materials
- Newspaper
- Few buttons or heart sequins
- String
- Scissors
- Glue
Newspaper Heart Garland – How To:
Decide on the width of you little “flags”. I used a certain column size in our newspaper and used that, cheated with, to cut the same width each time without having to measure. You could measure it out if you want to, mine was about 70mm x 140mm, more or less. I cut 9 in total, but you can decide how many flags you want, more would obviously give you a longer garland.
Each newspaper strip was folded in half, horizontally AND THEN vertically. On the FOLDED side, I cut half a heart and a triangle shape, as shown below. The first cutouts were used as templates to make the rest look identical.
When opened up it looks like this:
If you want to save time with the cutting part, an alternative way to make these cutouts is to use paper punches. A medium sized heart punch and the corner of a large square shape punch could work.
Then, the flags were glued to the string, leaving a 30mm gap between each one. Only a tiny bit of glue is needed.
Lastly, small buttons were added here and there to give our garland a little bit of colour.
A sweet heart garland idea, and frugal too! This craft took about 15 minutes and would be perfect for tweens, teens or adults. Change up the shape and colour and use this idea for other holidays as well!
The heart cutouts were used for this pretty Newspaper Heart Collage. You would probably like to see this Hands and Heart Keepsake and Conversation Heart Cookies
