Watercolors for Kids – Heart Valentine’s Cards

Watercolors for Kids – lovely card making
I like the idea of Valentines Day being loose and happy, filled with love in whatever way we want to experience it.
Cards are always my favorite project to make this time of year, since you can experiment, play, have lots of creative fun, and then give that fun to an appreciated recipient.
What better medium to experiment and be loose with than watercolor? It’s so fun- the pinks and reds look beautiful and translucent on the paper, and the structure of a heart shape balances beautifully with the puddly personality of watercolors.
You can use card stock, or any sturdy paper for this, but I chose to use watercolor paper to add textural interest to the card. I also laid out about 10 cards to work on all at once- it’s so cool to look over your sea of artwork all over the table and see what they look like all together.
My favorite watercolors lately are pan colors- specifically the Kuretake brand, as they are LUSH and GORGEOUS!
I thought about making this card painting within a heart stencil, but I wanted the edges to be more loose and uneven, so I freehanded it. You could also lightly draw a heart shape with a pencil and then erase the lines after your paint dries.
For some of them I painted one color on the bottom and then added another color to the top. For some I got all crazy and painted one half at a time.
Watercolors for Kids – aren’t these splendid?
Practice a bit on some extra paper if you want to loosen up a bit before you tackle the cards – this is meant to be fun and easy, not structured. It helps to stand up while you’re painting- this always gets me moving around and painting a bit more freely.
