Goat Hand Puppet – Supplies needed

paper goat craft supplies

This is a lovely little goat craft, that only really needs paper! You could even make this from the “brown paper” you get in parcel packaging, for some thrifty crafting! Your goat can be made in any color that you wish. The great thing also, is that all you really need is paper, scissors, glue stick and a pen! Yay:

  • Paper in desired colors – one full sheet (US letter or A4) in main body color and scraps for the rest
  • Black pen for details
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

COMING SOON:

You can grab the basic template for free in my Gumroad store (add $0 at checkout, please don’t tip, as Gumroad is dreadful, but Buy Me a Coffee is a great alternative) OR you can get classroom ready (or library ready) worksheets for a small amount in my Teacher’s Pay Teacher’s store! These are always super popular with kids for more independent working!

How to make a paper hand puppet – video tutorial

As with many of my crafts here on Red Ted Art, I share with you a video tutorial, as well as the step by step photo instructions!

This video is also available for viewing on YouTube.

Paper Goat Puppet – Step by Step Instructions

Make the basic hand puppet shape

Begin by making the basic hand puppet shape. This is such a fun project and a great way to make hand puppets.. once you have the basic shape – you can decorate it whichever way you want!

Take your full sheet of paper. Fold just over 1/3 down.

Then fold over just 1/3 up. Add a little glue between the two folds and flatten.

You should now have a long piece of paper, that is a bit like a flattened tube!

Now fold the sheet in half.

Fold it again.

Open up the folds, and reverse one of the end folds, so you end up with a W shape like this:

unfold, and refold into a W

This is your basic puppet shape!

OPTIONAL: For the goat I thought it would be fun to “shape” the face a little by, folding up the sides at and angle. Then unfold them and tuck them into, like a reverse fold. The video will help you with this step.

Now you have a super basic hand puppet shape!

Decorate your paper hand puppet and turn it into a goat

Now for the creative part! Turn the humble paper puppet into a goat! You can do this using our basic (hand drawn) template COMING SOON, or create your own features!

For our goat, the template has:

  • Two horns
  • Two ears (with two pink parts of the centre – so four pieces in total)
  • A little hair piece
  • A goaty
  • Two round eyes and
  • A little nose
  • NOTE: i decided to add a simple red tongue afterwards. You can use the one of the large ears as a guide for this

Add detail to your cut outs with a black pen

Add details to your cut outs – in essence – some stripes to the horn and pupils to the eye

Assemble your paper goat hand puppet

Now you are ready to assemble the goat hand puppet:

Glue the hair in place. If it doesn’t quite fit – ie too big, you can trim it, or if too small cut out another lock of black hair if too short. The width of the hand puppet does vary a little, depending on your initial folds!

Then glue the goaty, eyes and nose in place.

As mentioned, I did add a tonque in the end. You can use the large ear shape as a basic shape and trim it to make it fit:

Ta-daaa. Isn’t this goat super fun!?
