The Book: Craft Projects for Minecraft and Pixel Art Fans by Choly Knight

Fabulous minecraft craft ideas for all

Well.. here are again, with a fantastic book by the talented crafter and author Choly Knight, you may know here from her many fabulous books – and varied books too – from sewing, to pixel art (very relevant today) to quilting and bling.. and so much more! Today, we take a look at the wonderful Craft Projects for Minecraft and Pixel Art Fans!

So what do you get as Choly dives into pixel art fun?

Of course you will get some fanastic Minecraft inspired DIY projects in this book, but more to that in a moment. I love that Choly first explores the world of pixels and we discover together how pixels literally feature everywhere these days – and have done for a long time.. from cross stitch to mosaics, pixel art is all around us. The book also provides some Minecraft and pixel art “inspiration” – from party food to party decor.. though you won’t get all the “steps” for these, the rest of the book IS packed with details DIYs, that you should feel confident to give some of the inspirations a go yourself. After all – once you have created your own pixel details for say the crocheted Creeper below, what is to stop you from using the same process to create Creeper features to add to a green balloon as party decor?

In this book Choly also talks to us about the key characteristics of the Minecraft game – so if you are wanting to make something for you kids.. but have no idea “who is who” in Minecraft, than this section will most certainly help you. The book is also peppered with cool Minecraft facts, tips and tricks.

Now to the crafts. The book contains a great mix of 15 different Minecraft inspired crafts. So, I am sure there is something from everyone. From Perler Beads (which my kids adored when they were young – thought the 3d flowers are definitely cooler than anything we made back in the day) to sewing projects (I love the bean bag cubes – great for some juggling fun) to a fantastic looking Ore Light.

So lots to explore and discover!

Today, we are going to give the Crocheted Creeper Pattern a go.. but before we do:

Grab yourself a copy of the book from Amazon or all good bookstores!

Crocheted Creeper

I love cuddly creatures, so I just had to make the iconic Creeper in a size that’s big enough for me to hug! Using bulky yarn this project is perfect for beginners to crochet [the book shares crochet basics for you to check out too – these haven’t been reshared here, but you can look at beginner crochet stitches over here]. It’s constructed from simple squares and cubes just like the Felt Plush Cube project on page 50, so it’s easy to put together. Just be careful if you start to hear your Creeper hiss!

Creeper Plush Size:

14″ x 6″ x 6″ (35.5 x 15.5 x 15.5cm) plush

Assembling the Creeper

creeper pixelated face

Use the CREEPER face pattern here as a guide to cut out some felt pieces for the face. [In the book you can trace the basic shape, and the book also gives extra information re how to size the basic Creeper Face for different sized crochet projects.]

Apply creeper face

Apply the face.

Use fabric glue to glue the felt Creeper face centered on one of the head sides, you can secure it with a few extra stitches if you wish.

[The book gives extra information re how to size the basic Creeper Face for different sized crochet projects.]

Create the cubes.

Gather the six pieces for the Creeper body: 2 sides, 2 front/back, and 2 top/bottom. [The book refers you to another “cube” project for extra step photos – so you would be getting additional info, when purchasing the book] and assemble the pieces into one complete body. Make sure the sides are sewn around the bottom piece with the top added last. Use the thread tails and the yarn needle to stitch the sides using a whipstitch.

crocheted creeper assembly

Finish the remaining pieces.

Repeat step 2 with the head and feet pieces. When finished, you should have 1 head, 1 body, and 4 feet assembled.

sew creeper together

Attach the head.

Center the head on top of the body and stitch it in place around the top edge of the body.

Sew the feet.

Align the top edge of the feet with the bottom edge of the body. Sew two in a row on the front of the body and two in a row on the back. For extra stability, sew the feet in place where they meet the front of the body and again where they meet the underside of the body.

Make the toes.

Using the black yarn, stitch several big whip stitches along the bottom edge of the feet to create toes.
