How to make Spring Paper Plate Dioramas – Video Tutorial
As with many of my crafts, here is a fun little tutorial video for you to check out first! You can then read the step by step photo instructions below if you wish.
How to make Rainbow Paper Plate Spring Animal Cards
Shape the paper plate to allow it to stand up as a Spring Card later

Begin by folding the paper plate in half – with the back of the plate on the outside. make a neat crease.
Decorate the OUTSIDE of the Paper Plate with your Spring Animal

Drawing on the back of the plate sketch out your animal – make it as big as possible.
NOTE: The BASE of the animal, MUST lign up with the crease of the paper plate!
How to draw a simple chicken, rabbit and lamb
For that kawaii look – I like to draw a slightly smaller body and bigger head. Then I sketch in the features – like the comb, beak and wattle.
Once I am happy with the features, I use a black pen to outline them. Once the black pen has fully dried, you can rub out any pencil lines.
Color in the rest of your animal with colorful pens if required.

Here is how to draw the other animals! As you can hopefully see, they all have a very basic shape – two circles… then with added features to turn them into a rabbit and a little black sheep.
Cut out the spring animal carefully – it MUST remain attached to the paper plate

Cut out the hen from the paper plate – try and be as neat as possible, as you want the back of the plate to be as intact as possible.
NOTE: do not cut out the WHOLE animal! The base of the animal must remain attached!

You should have a relatively neat cut now! And you should be able to fold down the “flaps!
Now it is time to draw your paper plate spring scenes

Now it is time to decorate the plate to make the spring animals habitat. You will notice that this will be on the OTHER side of where you drew your hen, rabbit or sheep.
Have lots of fun with the decorations. Paper plates are particularly good for drawing rainbows! They already have that lovely arch shape that you simply have to follow. But you can also look at our little Paper Plate Sheep at the end and see that you can draw any background that you wish!
Attach your spring animal to the spring background

Now it is time to secure your spring animal to their paper plate background with a little tape.
You can also shape the plate a little, by folding back the edges and give it a nice 3d effect.

Note that the little hen is not glue flat on the back, but that the tape gives it a little distance.

The plates should easily stand up by themselves.

See our three little designs again. I love the little fence that follows the pattern of the paper plate for the sheep’s meadow. Isn’t it adorable!
I hope you enjoyed this little Paper Plate craft. As mentioned it was orginially to created to use every day materials for Sky Kids and the Best Makes Ever! Series, which I am now able to share with you over the coming weeks here on Red Ted Art!
