The Christmas Crafting season is upon us and with that, it is time for a new adorable Christmas Crochet Pattern.. I welcome back the lovely Jennifer Percival from Crochet to Play with another super cute free crochet pattern – this cute Crochet Mitten Pattern. They look particularly cute as a crochet Christmas garland, but would also work well as Christmas tree ornaments.. or add a chocolate coin or a note in each for a DIY Crochet Advent Calendar.

Basic Mitten Pattern Notes

Materials Needed:

Yarn – “I Love This Cotton” in Forest (or similar worsted/aran weight yarn)
Size US E/3.5mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
1 Stitch marker
Straight pins

Stitches/Abbreviation Used:

R – round/row
magic ring
ch- chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – triple crochet
FPhdc – front post half double crochet
BPhdc – back post half double crochet

Finished Crochet Mitten Size:

Each mitten measures about 3” tall by 3” wide, including the thumb.

General Tips when making this Christmas Crochet:

• The mittens are worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of
every round to keep your place.
• Before attaching thumb to mitten, use straight pins to secure. This way you can adjust
as needed and place it exactly where you want it before sewing. Just make sure to remove the pins when you’re done!

Basic Mitten Pattern:

This pattern is for a basic crochet mitten. Once you have got the hang of it, you can make it in lots of different colors, add stripes or sew on other details, to make lots of cute mitten pairs!

You’ll be working in continuous rounds towards the opening of the mitten, which will have a
ribbed edge. You’ll then add the “thumb”.

R1: 8 hdc into a magic ring. (8)

R2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16)

R3: (Hdc, 2 hdc) 8x around. (24)

R4-R11: Hdc in each st around.

R12-R13: (FPhdc, BPhdc) 12x around.

Fasten off, weaving in end.

Crochet Mitten Thumb Pattern:

R1: 8 hdc into a magic ring. (8)

R2-R3: Hdc in each st around.

Fasten off, leaving long tail for attaching.

Use yarn needle to sew thumb to mitten. When making pairs of mittens, make sure to sew thumbs on opposite sides.
