How about making a cute pop up Diwali Card to give to friends and family? This is a lovely Diya Pop Up card and goes hand in hand with the 3d Paper Diya we have made before! This time, I have added templates (and worksheets) for both crafts for you to use!
A wonderful 2 for 1 Diwali Craft for your students to make this Diwali Holiday Season. The Diwali festival is also known as the festival of light. It is a celebration of color and light. Key themes for this holiday are Diyas – a small oil lamp, as well as Rangolis – colorful patterns. Here we share a 2 for 1 Diya Craft. Students can make either a 3d Paper Diya ornament to hang in the classroom or a similar Pop Up Diya Card to take home for friends and family. The 3d element makes it a perfect STEM project – especially as the craft is circle based.. and you can discuss semi circles and quarters, whilst make this lovely craft.
Three different templates have been included. As well as a “print to colored paper” version, for different classroom applications. The sample shared here uses the smallest circle templates for the ornament, the pop up card uses the medium circle templates. You can mix and match flame sizes too if you wish.

How to make a Pop Up Diya Card for Diwali
Remember, we have fantastic ad-free worksheet instructions for BOTH the 3d Paper Diya Ornament and the greeting card to print out over on Gumroad.
Cut out your paper Diya Shapes
Choose what size Paper Diya you would like to make and print out your templates. Cut out your shapes in desired Diya colors. For an ornament 10-12 circles, 8 flames are nice. For the card 6 circles and 1 flame in yellow and 1 in orange is sufficient.
Fold your paper shapes
Fold the circle in half and then in half again, so you have a quartered circles. Fold the flames in half length wise (remember for the Pop Up card – we only used ONE yellow one and ONE orange one that we cut down a little).
Making the Diya Base
Assemble the Diya base first: Open the circle, so you can see the semi circle and add glue to 2/3s of the left side (see first image, between the white lines). Fold and secure.
Add glue to the outside flap – along the spine and again 2/3 along the curve (see second image). Take care that you have your folds the right way around – you need the two openings on the left with the closed spine on the right.
Place a second quarter onto the glue. If done correctly, you should be able to see 4 opening petals (see third image). Repeat these three steps until you have a stack of papers. As mentioned above, for the ornament a stack of 10-12 is nice, for the card, 6 is enough.
To turn this into a Diya Ornament, do grab out worksheets off gumroad or visit here.
Assembling the Pop Up Card
We made a 2d flame (though you can make it in 3d too)
Take the orange flame and cut down and glue inside your yellow flame (image 1).
Fold your card in half – so you have a central line.
Add glue to the one half of your Diya base and one half of your flame (image 2)
Place on the fold of the card and secure. It is best to align the flame as close to the crease as possible. Whilst the base, as it is bulky, can be moved a 1mm or 2 away from the crease. Add glue the exposed flaps (image 3).
Close the card and push down to help secure the Diya shapes. Open and your basic pop up Diya card is finished!
If you “layer some of the flames”, you can use them to pop as well! Add glue to one half of your flame and place a second flame on top, until you have a stack of flames as well.
You can also make a 3d flame, which looks like this (simply use a the flame “stack” instead of the 2d flame).
Ta-daaaa. Your Pop Up Diwali card is finished! Time to wish your family and friends a very Happy Diwali! As mentioned these templates can be turned into 3d Paper Decorations as well!
