Todays fun Summer Paper Plate Masks make a great addition to our summer beach Ocean Paper Plate crafts, as well as our super popular Summer Crafts for Preschoolers!

We, over at Creating Creatives, just love masks. We love making them and then playing make-believe in them. I wanted to share a summer time mask with you Tedsters, so was having a think of what  I could make when all of a sudden a sunburnt mask popped into my head. These masks are pretty silly, but they also do a great job of reminding your kids to put on sunblock. My kids got a huge giggle out of them and now every time they go into the sun they think of how silly the masks look and don’t want to look like that so are reminded to put on sunblock. Talk about a win/win! I hope you enjoy these silly masks and tag me @creatingcreatives on Instagram if you make one.

How to make your Summer Paper Plate Masks

  1. Turn your plate upside down and draw the holes for the eyes. You can do this free hand, or print and cut out my mask printable, then line it up with your paper plate and trace the eyes onto your plate.
  2. Next, cut out the eyes with your craft knife on a cutting mat or piece of cardboard.
  3. Now it’s time to draw your face. I started with the sunglasses, then drew a triangle nose (which we’ll later cut out), then the hair and mouth.

  1. Once you’re happy with your drawing it’s time to paint it in. You can see the order I painted my mask below. I started with the normal skin color, then added the sunburn skin color. In image 3 I added some additional red burn highlights. And in image 4 I painted in the hair, you can also see I left a blank area in the hair for the part, and at the bottom by the chin. I’ll cut these out in a minute.

  1. Before I cut out the mask I’ll add my final details, like lip highlights, eyelashes, hair detail etc.
  2. Once the paint is dry cut out the white bits I was talking about in step 4. This gives the mask a nice shape.
  3. Next cut out the nose. You want to keep this attached to the mask, so start cutting half way down the triangular nose, across the bottom, and then half way up the other side.

  1. Finally, punch a hole on either side of the mask and thread through some elastic, string, or even pipe cleaner.

You’re done. Wear around and make lots of jokes about putting on sunblock. Hope you have a happy and sunburn free summer!
