How to Crochet Blanket Patterns

Many moons ago, when I first learnt to crochet, one of the first “big” things I crocheted, was a baby blanket. It was a super fun to have a go at “pattern making” whilst honing my crochet skills. With that in mind, I have a super lovely crochet blanket pattern for you today – by the oh so talented Esme Crick from her brand new book – Maximalist Mosaic Crochet.

Maximalist Mosaic Crochet Book by Esme Crick

The lovely Esme chose the Bed Runner project as a taster project for you, my Red Ted Art readers, herself! Which I love, as she gave her projects and YOU some thought. She thought this project would look particularly lovely in a childre’s bedroom. I think it is also great, as, as a bed runner, it is a somewhat smaller project and therefore a nice challenge to someone who hasn’t crocheted a big blanket before, without being too overwhelming! The colors a beautiful and I feel really have some fantastic autumn vibes about them. Wouldn’t this be just the perfect make?

Blooms Bed Runner

This super soft chenille runner is the perfect bed warmer. Layer it with a jumble of floral and effortlessly mis-matched bedding to create a truly boho and joyful bedroom. The pattern is inspired by late summer flowers hanging heavily after rain — very beautiful indeed.

Skills level – Two (out of three)

You will need

Yarn

Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky (100% polyester) chunky (bulky) weight, 100m (109yd) per 100g (31/2oz) ball, in the following shades:

• Fandango Pink (5372); 2 balls (A)
• Blush (5062); 4 balls (B)
• Scarlet Red (5100); 1 ball (E)
• Black (5000); 2 balls (C)
• Antique Gold (5145); 3 balls (D)

Hook – 6.5mm (US K/101/2) crochet hook

Pattern Multiples

Pattern works to a multiple of (x 6) 4 for your starting chain.

Tension (Gauge)

10 sts and 12 rows measure 10 x 10cm (4 x 4in) over pattern using a 6.5mm (US K/101/2) hook.

Finished Size

Approx. 70 x 150cm (271/2 x 59in)

DOPAMINE BOOST

Stick with a floral colour scheme, using the colours of your favourite blooms. But try a DK/light worsted yarn on a smaller hook to create your own delicate floral landscape.

PATTERN NOTES: There are many colour changes in this pattern — only fasten off yarn when instructed to do so.

Row 1 (RS): 1sc in second ch from the hook and in each ch to end, turn. (63 sts)

Edging is worked along two long sides only.

First long side

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing, join A with a sl st in first row end on corner, ch1, 1sc in same st, 1sc in each of next 2 row ends, *skip next row end, 1sc in each of next 3 row ends; rep from * to end, finishing on any st in repeat. If last st happens to be a skipped st, work 1sc to finish row. Turn.
Row 2 (WS): Ch1, 1sc in each st to end.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Second long side

Work as for first long side.
