Handmade Heirloom Dolls Book

This little ghost project, is actually an accessory to one of the doll sfrom this gorgeous Handmade Heirloom Dolls book by Emilie Hernandes from Mani Mina Studio, you can find some of her stunning sewing patterns on Etsy too. Beautiful, whimiscal and timeless! These are sewing projects that aren’t just delightful to make, but the resulting dolls and toys, will be kept as lovely heirlooms forever, I am sure. So, if you love these patterns, you can now get this gorgeous book with a set of beautiful dolls to choose from.
I would like to think that I have a “personal” connection to this book, as I am 99.9% certain, that when I was a teenager, I made a rag doll like this. I remember spending AAAAGES over embroidering the face. It was very satisfying and oh so cute. But fear not – if you are worried about the embroidery (which I understand, it is something to practice), the book has a great detailed section how to paint these beautiful heirloom doll faces too.
I was rather taken by Vesper the Witch and thought her little Ghost accessory would be the perfect little sample project for you to have a go at here today!

How to sew a felt Ghost Softie (incl free pdf pattern)
Cut out two ghost pieces from the Little Ghost pattern. [NOTE: For fun, I added the the softie ghost pattern in two sizes – the book has one size, which is perfect to fit in the little Witch’s hands. I added two here, as it allows you to also sew with younger kids and involve them in learning to sew!]

Place the paper Ghost pattern on top of one of the felt ghost pieces you just cut out. Using a very sharp pencil, poke through the eyes and the mouth line to mark their placement on the ghost face.

Using a needle and black thread, embroider the eye circle first and then stitch a half circle around the eye as shown. [NOTE: this technique is outlined in detail in the book. If you do not feel comforable sewing this kind of eye, you can use small black split pins or safety eyes instead]

Repeat the same process with the remaining eye and stitch a U shape for the mouth.

Lay the two ghost pieces together, with the embroidered piece facing you. Pin them together.

Use a blanket stitch to stitch all around the ghost, leaving a small opening on the bottom edge (right side) of the doll. For added cuteness, you can add pink or coral blush with a cotton swab. [NOTE: the book detail on sewing stitches. I also have a Basic Handstitches for Beginners, including the Blanket Stitch for you. I have also embedded the Blanket Stitch video for you here]

Fill up the ghost doll with small amounts of stuffing at a time. Make sure to fill up the arms.

When the ghost is fully stuffed, stitch up the opening using blanket stitches.

What do you think? Isn’t it adorable?
