Cross Stitch by the Sea

Max Pigeon, also known as Pigeon Coop Designs combines his love for needle craft and nature in this wonderful new book Cross Stitch by the Sea (that follows, his already very successful book Cross Stitch in the Forest) (you can learn more about Max here). This is a beautiful book of 25 gorgeous projects – each with detailed supplies lists – so you can get the colors of your work “just so” and of course pattern guides. The book also has a fantastic introduction, talking you through the basics of cross stitch and how to ensure you have beaufiful and successful cross stitch projects!

As you can see from the sample photos above, the book explores a variety of “by the sea” projects. I adore the wonderful puffin and sea horse, but there is so much more to discover in this book!

Today, you get to have a go at the Drifting Duo – a wonderful set of jellyfish!

This wonderful Cross Stitch by the Sea Book is available on Amazon and all good booksellers from September 2026.

Drifting Duo Pattern

There is something strangely calming about jellyfish. Even if, in real life, they aren’t the most pleasant animal to encounter, the way they slowly ride the waves and pulse rhythmically is mesmerizing. My professional advice is to listen to soothing, ethereal music while stitching this piece to achieve a true sense of peace.

Although most of them are translucent, jellyfish come in all colors, and I chose to display them in pinks against a navy background to make them really pop. I added very subtle blue bubbles in the background to give a sense of open ocean while not drawing any attention away from the jellies themselves, the stars of this pattern.

Did You Know?

Despite their name, jellyfish are not actually fish at all. In fact, humans are more closely related to fish than jellyfish are! Jellies (as some scientists refer to them to avoid confusion) are invertebrates more closely related to corals and sea anemones.
