Have an awkward shaped gift (I find plush toys SO HARD to wrap) or have run out of wrapping paper and need a cute gift box idea in a hurry? Fear not.. use wrapping paper to make a super cute gift bag, which can also be made using old NEWSPAPERS (we do love newspaper hacks)!! Yep.. these little DIY Gift Bags are quick to make, look fab and will get you out of a gift wrap pickle. Love how quirky the newspaper houses look. You can also use and decorate brown packing paper for this DIY gift bag idea!
To make your paper or newspaper Gift Bags you will need –
- Gift wrap/ brown paper or newspaper (if using newspaper, use 2 layers)
- Scissors
- Tape
- Pens (optional for decorating)
To make your paper or newspaper Gift Bags How To:
Begin by measuring your piece of paper – in essence – it needs to wrap around the awkward gift shape and then have a good 20cm extra in length.
Remove the gift. Fold in the sides and flatten. So you have a “seam” running down the middle. Secure this seam with sticky tape.
Fold up a flap – use that 20cm extra you cut earlier.
Now fold down the side – to from a triangle. Repeat on other side.
Fold down a flap and repeat on other side.
Tape down. This forms the base of your DIY gift bag!
Now trim the gift bag down a little if need me. Pop in your awkward shaped gift and fold over the top of the bag and secure with a little tape. Now wasn’t that an easy DIY gift bag? It literally takes minutes to make and looks so neat!
For the newspaper gift bag, we tucked in the sides at the top of the bag to make a “roof shape”, then decorated the gift bag whilst lying flat to make it look like a little house. Easy peasy and looks adorable. The perfect upcycle newspaper DIY!!!!

Oh, how funny! I Don’t have videos on all my DIYs! And this one happened to be one of the “no video ones”. You are the first to ASK for a video (which is good). I am afraid I don’t have one right now. I will see if I can do one at some point soon.
