Fairy Wand Cookies
You may have seen our 4th July Cookie Pops a couple of weeks ago. As we were making them, it dawned on me that they would make GREAT Fairy Wand Cookies too! Add our secret ingredient and then you really have a crackling and popping magic wand – popping candy!!! We made a batch, gobbled them all up and then had friends round and made some more. They went down a treat. Perfect for a fairy party indeed!
If you know us, you will recognise this recipe – when baking for the family, I am a strong believer – if the recipe works, then stick with it.. no need to find something completely new!! And this recipe works for us!!! - 300g (2.5 cups) Flour
- 200g (3/4 cup) Butter (at room temperature)
- 100g (0.5 cups) Sugar
- Icing sugar & water or Royal Icing
- Popping Candy (ideally in pink, rainbow or white, ours was yellow, not as pretty!)
Pre-heat the oven to 180C
- Star shaped cookie cutter
- Coffee stirrers
1) Mix your ingredients to make a smooth dough. If the dough is very soft (i.e. if the butter was very soft), place in fridge for 5-10min to let it firm up a little). If the dough is to crumbly, you an add a splash of milk, but we rarely need to do this.
2) Roll out t 0.5cm-1cm. You want them fairly thick, so that it holds the stick well. Pip Squeak LOVES getting her own mini rolling pin out and getting “rolling”!!
3) Cut out your star shapes.
4) Gently insert your wooden stick and place on tray.
5) Bake for approximately 15min – though do check on them and if they are firm and starting turn golden remove from oven.
6) Let cool a minute or two and then transfer on to a rack.
Once fully cooled – you can either use icing sugar with a little water or make your own Royal Icing Sugar, which has a lovely finish. I was “naughty” and used a ready mix Royal Icing Sugar that the lovely Domestic Goddesque gave me!! When we had our friends round and made our second batch, we went the simpler route of just normal icing sugar and water. The finish isn’t as smooth, but to be honest, the kids gobbled all the cookies almost straight away anyway!
1) So, make up your icing – if it is the simple variety, add water to your icing sugar and food colouring. Of follow the instructions on your packet.
2) Carefully, add the icing to your cookie and try to make a star shape – if you are doing this with a group of kids, I REALLY wouldn’t worry about any icing sugar dripping down the sides. Just have fun and cover with lots of sprinkles and the popping candy. We found you needed quite a bit of popping candy, as some will “pop” already when in contact with the moist icing. The main this is to have fun. If you are making them, you can shape the star points with the back of a spoon or a knife.
