Benefits of doing Lacing Cards with Preschoolers
Firstly they are fun – ok for some children they are fun. Personally, I have very early childhood memories of LOVING lacing cards. It was one of a favorite activity in preschool. I think I love the order and colours… and the pretty “results”. Of course they are “obvious” fine motor activities for kids, but from an educational point of view, lacing cards help with many developmental aspects:
- Fine Motor practice/ skills,
- Visual Motor,
- Hand Eye Coordination,
- Bilateral Coordination,
- Grasping Skills
- Introducing sewing skills
Ideas for your lacing cards
Not only are the lacing cards a fun activity for young children to have a go at, you can use the lacing cards in a number of ways afterwards:
- Use the Halloween lacing cards to decorate a bulletine board
- Connect your lacing cards to make a spookily cute Halloween garland
- Use the hallowen lacing cards as little ornaments (esp if you decide to print them in half size, they would look great tangling from a tree)
- Stick them ont some card folded in half and use them as greeting cards
What Lacing Cards Designs are included?
I have four simple lacing card designs for you to choose from! They all come with the hole punch marks or in “plain” – the plain set is great if you want to put the holes closer together for older children/ more able children and use a needle instead of a hole punch!
First we have the Pumpkin Lacing Card and Candy Cane Lacing Cards – they are friendly faces, so you may wish to uses these right through to Thanksgiving even?

And then we have a set of Ghost Lacing Cards and Bat Lacing Cards. Of course the bats would be lovely for any “bat study unit” too and you don’t have to use them in the Halloween context!

Supplies needed to make your Halloween Lacing Card
- The halloween lacing card printables (there is a full set of a very (!!) small fee, you can grab yourself the unmarked set for free)
- Some light cardstock (a cereral packet is ideal!) or a laminator (though I prefer to avoid the plastic
- A hole punch or a needle to poke the holes (adults should us the needle, the hole punch could be great for finger strengthening skills)
- Some yarn with a large rounded needle for small hands or yarn with some sticky tape at the end to make a “shoe lace” for threading
- Scissors & glue for cutting the templates and pasting onto the card

How to use these Halloween Printables
Print out your desired Halloween Lacing Card – either the marked hole punch lacing card or the unmarked set.
Stick onto some recycled cardboard (as mentioned cereal boxes have a great thickness for lacing cards).
You or your little one can have a go at cutting out the shapes. You don’t have to cut them “exactly”, just as neatly as possible. The candy cane and the bat are the “easiest” to practice cutting, the ghost and pumpkin a great for more advance cutting skills.
Use a hole punch to make the holes, or a sharp needle if you want to add more holes. Please note: a needle should only be used by adults.
Prepare the yarn: either use a large plastic needle or you can add a little sticky tape to one end of the yarn to make it into a “shoe lace” for your little one to use.
Thread through the first hole and tie a little knot.
Now get your preschooler to continue the threading. The great thing about lacing cards, is that your toddler or preschooler can do it which every way they want. They can practice a “running stitch” or they can practice a yarn over stitch. Is a great way to look at sequencing and pattern making!
Enjoy!!
