How to make and decorate coasters

This is a sponsored post.

Mums, dads and grandparents all love a good cup of tea after a busy day of looking after the kids. That’s why it’s a great idea for children to make and decorate personalised tea coasters in time for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparents Day.

All children need for this task is:

* A design-a-coaster kit (a pack of six costs £4.99 from Yellow Moon)

* A set of acrylic Deco pens (£10.99)

The coaster kits consist of two plastic squares and two pieces of paper which are handily already cut to size.

Begin by picking up a Deco pen and deciding what you will write on the coaster. It’s a good idea to put a mug on the coaster and write around it as it is always nice to see the message when a cup of tea is resting in the centre.

Below are a few ideas for what to write:

* Tea’s up

* Everything stops for tea

* Mr T.

* Mrs T

* Keep calm, drink tea and carry on

Or maybe you can come up with a different wording like Kate has below.

With this design Kate has let the red ink on the cup dry before adding cheerful white polka dots.

Once the ink has dried it is time to put together your coaster. Do this by placing the paper square face down on the square groove of the first coaster piece. Match up the second piece on top, so that the paper is sandwiched beneath the coaster pieces, and press down.

Now your coaster is finished and it’s time to put the kettle on and enjoy a good cup of tea.

If your appetite for making art is still not quenched, then you can always turn your hand to personalising plain white mugs with brilliant porcelain paint pens. Yellow Moon currently sells a pack of 4 plain white mugs for £3.99 and a pack of brilliant porcelain pens can be bought for £10.99.

The great thing about this activity is that you can wipe away mistakes if you’re not satisfied with the art work but, unlike the coaster-making activity you will need access to an oven when it comes to drying the paint.

A few examples of the kind of results you can get from personalising mugs can be found below – you’d be a mug not to have crack at making some!
