Aren’t they wonderful? And As you can see from these photos, you can really make these Craft Stick Photos Ornaments as simple or as “complicated” as you like, depending on what craft supplies you have to hand and how much time you have to craft with your preschoolers:

For example, you can leave your craft sticks plain in their natural colors and wrap with things like ribbon, yarn or pipecleaners. YOu can glue on a little Christmas Tree Tree Trunk. Or you can paint you craft sticks green (and any other funky Christmas Tree Color), leave off the Christmas Tree Trunk and decorate with crafty bits and pieces.

Once again, a cute little Photo Christmas Tree Ornament to inspire you, but for you to make it your own!

Popsicle Stick Photo Ornament SUPPLIES LIST

craft stick trees supplies

Note: as with all our crafts, do work with the supplies you have to hand! And don’t go out and purchase any!! If you are reading this as part of “Christmas in July”, this is a great opportunity for you to save those ice lolly sticks during the summer months! I always wash ours and let them dry for crafting. No need to buy any “special” craft sticks.

  • Per Christmas Tree, you will need 3 Craft Sticks (or 4, if adding a stem)
  • Green paint (if you wish or other Christmas Tree colors)
  • Decorative Craft Items: e.g. ribbon, pipecleaners, yarn for wrapping (great for concentration), pom poms, scrunched up tissue paper, sequins etc
  • Glue to glue the craft sticks – a glue stick will work, a hot glue gun is quick or regular craft glue works as well – you will just need to add drying times
  • A photo of your child that is printed out big enough for the craft stick tree frame
  • Scissors

This may sound like a lot of supplies, but essentially you are using craft sticks and a photo!

How to make Craft Stick Christmas Tree Photo Ornaments

As with lots of Red Ted Art crafts, I have a video tutorial for you to check out or you can look at the step by step written instructions below!

Step by Step Photo Instructions for the Craft Stick Photo Ornaments

So.. first up, decide on what kind of tree you would like to make. We we will focus on the green Christmas Tree in this image.

Get three craft sticks ready and paint them your desired color. Here we have gone for a traditional green popsicle stick Christmas tree.

make a tree shape

Make the basic craft stick tree shape. A hot glue gun makes this process quicker, but any glue will work. You can make the “base” the Christmas tree triangle appear shorter, by adjusting how you glue the slopey craft sticks. Some people like to cut a little off the bottom craft stick.

Now have fun decorating your craft stick tree. You can use sequins, pom poms, stickers.. whatever you fancy. As mentioned a bit of pipecleaner wrapping is fun too! Or use yarn and ribbons. The wrapping activity is great for fine motor skills and concentration.

Now it is time to prepare your photo and make sure it fits your photo frame. Cut it out and then glue behind the craft stick tree.

Finish off by gluing on a ribbon to the back of your tree (you can add this before adding your photo, but it doesn’t matter too much!).

you can add a tree stem too

Your Photo Christmas Tree Ornaments made with popsicle sticks are finished! Aren’t they cute? So fun!

This photo ornaments for toddlers and KS1 students make wonderful keepsake crafts for parents and grandparents. Something that they will bring out and cherish every Christmas!
