Hi, I’m Helen from Arty Crafty Kids and it’s an absolute pleasure to be contributing to this years 31 Days of Love Series. With the theme of ‘love’ in mind, I have bundled my passion for reading, colouring, bold patterns and ‘pretty things’ into these Whimsical Heart Bookmarks.
As a colouring enthusiast, I enjoy detailed patterns that come to life with colour and allow for one’s creativity to shine. Each heart has been hand-drawn and filled with special intricacies that I hope you will love. Additional space around the hearts have been added for fanciful embellishments and this tutorial will demonstrate an easy peasy technique for creating beaded tassels.
Of course, the tassels could be swapped for pom-poms or even lettered bead strings to personalise with a name or special message.
The possibilities are endless and if you’re feeling particularly creative, the hearts could be strung together to form a pretty mobile or garland.
For now, let’s get crafty with bookmarks!
Heart Bookmark Design – Materials
- Download and print the heart template ( Remember to adjust your printer settings to ‘fit to page’)

Whimsical Heart Bookmarks – How To
Print and colour your hearts
Step 1: Download the free heart template and use your favourite medium to colour the bookmarks.
Step 2: Using a hole puncher, add a single hole to the bottom of the bookmark.

Step 3. Select your favourite coloured thread, spread your fingers and wrap the thread around your fingers.
Step 4: Carefully slide the thread off your fingers and cut as shown above.
Step 5: Remove 3 pieces of thread from the bunch and add one to the heart, securing with a double knot.
TIP: Make sure you leave enough room between the heart and knot for your chosen beads, AND some leftover thread to wrap around the remaining bunch.
Step 6: Add the beads to the knotted thread.
Step 7: Use the remaining knotted thread to wrap around the bunch and secure with a double knot.
Step 8: Take the 2nd piece of thread and tightly wrap it around the bunch and secure with another double knot.
Step 9: Fold the bunch in half and position the remaining strand of thread about a 1cm from the top of the bunch. Wrap the thread around the bunch until it looks nice and neat. Secure with a final double knot and trim with scissors to remove any extra thread.
I hope you enjoy the process of creating your own Whimsical Heart Bookmarks and if you enjoy colouring, Arty Crafty Kids has an area dedicated to detailed colouring pages and cards for kids and adults.
