Salt dough is one of our favourite materials to use to get crafty with the kids over on Rainy Day Mum. It’s easy to make in your kitchen with just 3 simple ingredients and you can mould it into different shapes and forms just like clay or other modelling materials. This simple recipe can also be adapted to make different versions. For this Salt Dough LOVE Necklace, we have used a Lavender scented salt dough ideal for making in the microwave.
Lavender Scented Salt Dough
This recipe uses our microwave salt dough recipe which I had to come up with because my toddlers just couldn’t wait to decorate their Salt Dough Ornaments, but you could easily use a classic salt dough recipe just be aware that this will take longer to dry instead of around 30 seconds that this craft took my daughter and I. We use food colouring and some essential oils that we had around to colour and scent the mix.
Materials Needed for this LOVE Salt Dough Necklace
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 – 3/4 cup of water
- 1 cup of all purpose/plain flour
- skewer
- red food colouring
- lavender essential oil
- letter cookie cutters
- necklace elastic
To make the Lavender Scented Salt Dough
- Mix together the flour and salt.
- Add in the water with 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
- Mix with your hands.
- Turn out onto either a pastry board or a lightly floured surface.
- Knead thoroughly.
Colour the salt dough with around 3 drops of liquid food colouring.
How to Make the LOVE Necklace
- Split off a small portion of the salt dough.
- Roll out to around 1/5cm thick
- Cut out the letters L, O, V and E from the dough.
- Take a skewer and in the side of each letter pass it through to make a complete hole.
Cover a microwaveable plate with greaseproof paper and lay the letters on. You could use the remaining salt dough to make some coloured salt dough beads.
Then follow the instructions for microwaving the salt dough very carefully. This is important as with small letters like this it may only take 30seconds but done wrong you can have a problem with the microwave.
Once dry then thread some necklace elastic through the holes and tie off. It can now be worn and not only does my daughter love it. But the lavender scent is also really calming and pleasant.
