Introducting our Guest Writer – Crafting With Kids

Hi! My name is Lindsey and I’m the creator behind Crafting with Kids. I hope you will find fun activities, easy crafts and other awesome ideas to keep those little minds busy. We love recycling items and creating art from it like with toilet paper roll crafts!

As a matter of fact, today I’m excited to share a fun and easy toilet paper roll Valentines Day craft with you.

Toilet Paper Roll Printing Ideas

So today, we will show you, how to shape the toilet paper roll into a heart for children of all ages to use and printing with. All children love “mark making”, so this is an opportunity for them to explore and have fun.

You don’t have to make the “perfect” heart, just enjoy printing.

Maybe you want to also explore a little colour theory and you can add a second color to your paint pallet and see what happens (with young children, I recommend sticking to two primary colors and maybe a little white, to avoid a big brown mess.. but to be honest, let them simply have fun!!).

You can use your printing making to:

  • Making gift wrapping paper (e.g. recycle some brown amazon packaging paper and decorate with hearts)
  • Make simple greeting cards
  • Older kids can turn be more targetted and print the hearts into a bouquet of flowers / heart balloons
  • You can color in your hearts
  • You can print the hearts on to watercolored paper

Lots of options!

How to make your Toilet Roll Heart Prints!

Top Tip for working with young children: Before you get stuck into thsi cute printing project, be sure to prepare your arts and crafts area – make sure you have plenty of space, your craft papers or cards handy and somewhere to “leave” or hang your finished heart prints to dry. Preparation takes the stress out of arty fun with little ones!

Shape your toilet paper roll into a heart

Place the ruler inside the toilet paper roll with two ends sticking out. Press it along an edge and create a straight fold along the toilet paper roll surface, with the ruler in between the fold.

Using the same method as in step 1, create another fold but in the opposite side and with the corner pointing towards the inside of the toilet paper roll.

Top Tip: For a sturdier shape, hold the folded toilet paper roll tightly pressed between the palms of your hands for a minute or two. Keep it pressed for a short time if you want a fluffy heart shape and for a longer time if you want a thinner heart shape.

Get heart printing

Dip the edges in paint and stamp away to create the cutest patterns! Try using different colors to give it a gradient effect.

Top tip: You can have just the one color or a combination of colours! We love experimenting with both.. you could make lots of red hearts or have reds, pinks and even white! Also – why not combine with some water colored paper? E.g. color in the background of your paper or card with lovely watercolors first? The art possibilities are endless!

Once you have finished with your heart printing, there are lots of things you can do:

  • Turn it into printed hearts gift wrap
  • Cut out a section and stick to a card for a toddler made Valentine’s Day Card
  • Come back with more paints and colour in the centre of the hearts or add some kawaii faces
  • Turn the paper into a fun little paper gift bag
  • Simply hang on your wall and admire!
