How to make a Yarn Wrapped Whale – Craft Club Ideas
Grab yourself the free whale printable. You will notice that there is page with just the one whale on it (so you can use the rest of paper for other crafts) and a sheet with 3 whales on it – if you want to use it as a hand out for children to trace and cut out their own shapes.
Cut out the whale shapes

As this was a library craft club activity, my daughter prepared all the cardboard whales ahead of time. This simply saves a little time when working with a large group and means that everyone will be able to finish their whale.
So per whale you will need the main whale body and a little fin.
Add the yarn wrapping grooves

What is often overlooked, is that yarn wrapping does need some little grooves cut into the sides of your template. Else your yarn will slide around at the beginning and frustrated your little one. You don’t need too many of these, just enough to help distribute the yarn.
Secure a knot at the back and start the yarn wrapping

The library had a stash of this beautiful blue yarn – so this is a photo from the actual craft session. Begin by doing one full wrap and tying a little knot to the back.
Then hand over the whale and let the kids have fun wrapping!

Don’t forget to yarn wrap the little fin too.
Cut out whale face shapes

We cut out a sweet little whale mouth and used our googly eye stickers for the whale. Most glues will stick to yarn, but if you are in a hurry, use a hot glue gun.
You can also add the fin with a hot glue gun.
FINISHED!
