I got the idea from My Kid Craft (do hop over for step by step photo instructions). She didn’t provide a quick and easy to use printable, so I wanted to make a free printable that you could use at home or the classroom. We adore paper Easter crafts! I then expanded on her idea and have created some Woven Egg & Chick Cards too.. and to stay tuned for some adorable Bunny Weaving and Woven Bunny Cards!!! The plain version would be great for mixed media collages too. If you have a go at using the printable and create collages.. PLEASE do send me some photos! I would love to see your (and your kids’) work!!!
I think these would even be a great Grade 2 Easter Weaving Art Project!

- Light cardstock for the printer. You can use paper, but light card is better. Or you can use paper and stick it onto card later (e.g. recycled card like a cereal box). I also love the idea of printing the chick & eggs onto coloured card. It looks extra fun and colourful.

How To Paper Weave Easter Chicks

I have “borrowed” the images from Chick in Egg Card, which is made in almost the same way (you simply have a little extra to cut!) so hopefully that is ok!
If you are using white card to print your Woven Easter Egg & Chick art, then I recommend colouring your chick BEFORE cutting out. That avoids and mess on the table and kids can paint or colour outside the lines with less “messiness”…. Remember, we also have some fabulous Woven Easter Egg & Chick Cards and do watch out for our Easter Weaving Projects round up! Some great ideas coming your way.
Colouring your free Easter Chick template

We do really love how easy these Chick cards are to make and how lovely the paper weaving looks! Perfect Easter Egg patterns!
Begin by printing out your free Easter Printable onto light card stock.
Colour in your chick in whatever colour you like! If you are using the watercolour pencils like we have.. let the chick dry fully before moving on.
Cutting out your Easter Egg Card

Once it is all dry, fold the paper along the edge where the two eggs meet. If you make the fold as neat as possible (with the tops and bottoms of the page aligning, you can cut out both halves at the same time!
Use the “full egg” to cut out your card.
Open the card and cut out the “top half” of your egg & chick side.

Cut along the lines of your egg & chick card.
Then cut 1cm strips of coloured paper. I am not great at cutting super neat strips… and I think the results still look lovely. But needles to say, the neater these strips the better. If you making these a KS1 classroom project you may want to use a paper cutter in advance!
Creating your Woven Egg Cards

Start on the top left side of the egg. Add a little glue to your strip and glue it under the first strip. Then weav in and out. Securing it at the other end with a little more glue (you can trim later).
On the second row glue on TOP of the strip and weave.
Continue until you come to the bottom of the egg. I find it helps to glue down each part of the last strip to secure and “neaten” the final egg.

These cute little Easter Egg Paper Weaving Cards are smaller than the large chick and are therefor great for slightly older children – maybe a brownie troup or a KS1 class. Great for writing practice too!
