How to Sew a Felt Fox Ornament
You may recoginse this little Felt Fox Ornament, as a cousin to the previously shared Penguin Ornament and Reindeer Ornament! It is part of a mini series of easy circle based Felt Ornaments to sew with kids (or beginners!) and also inlcudes an felt Owl Ornament (TBC)!! I love these ornaments, as they are really easy to sew, you can combine a little fabric glue or hot glue with sewing or sew them all by hand. Also, as they are based on circles, you don’t really need a template to make these (though there is one for the Penguin & Reindeer – you can adapt the reindeer templates for the fox and owls). Come and make this cute Fox Craft with me today!

As mentioned, this is a lovely little felt ornament – that is great for beginners! You can practice your running stitch, experiment with over stich or go brave and have a go at (my favourite) the blanket stitch! I have a set of basic hand sewing stitches for you to explore!
This little craft was originally made for my collaborative Sky Kids “Best Makes Ever Series” with Arty Craft Kids back in 2020! And I am now able to (finally) also share with you here on Red Ted Art!
Supplies needed for your Fox Ornament:
- Felt in fox colors (I used white and orange – but your fox can be any colour – you could use light blue and white for an arctic fox maybe?)
- Recycled card to make your template
- A cup to trace
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Thread
- Ribbon for hanging
- A little stuffing (toy stuffing, recycled pillow, bubble wrap, yarn scraps)
- Hot glue (optional)
How to sew a fox felt ornament – Video Tutorial
The video tutorial does focus on the Owl Ornament, however the shapes and the process are the same for the fox! Alternatively follow the step by step photo instructions below!
How to sew a fox ornament or key chain (step by step photo instructions)
As mentioned this a two for one craft! So you can actually make your owl ornament too (though have also listed that separately for interest!

Make your own templates
The attached focusses on the owl, however the fox uses the same shapes and the rest of the post will then focus on the fox. You can also get the Reindeer Ornament printable use that if you don’t want to draw your own (the face is inverted, but still works for the fox ornament).
Take a glass or cup and trace a circle. A jar lid works too.
Setch in two white parts of the face, as well as some ears for the foxs. The “owl wing” is actually the shape shape as the foxes white facial features. They are like a simple leaf.
There is like a triangle rounded at the top:

Now you are ready to trace and cut the felt.

Cut your felt shapes
You will need two orange circles. 2 white “leaf” parts, two orange ears (rounded triangles). And small circles for the fox nose, eyes and rosey cheeks.
Here you can see again how the same shapes work for an owl vs the fox:

Let’s move on to the assembly!

Check your shapes fit the fox/ owl
Before gluing or sewing anything, place all your shapes together and check that they “work” for you. E.g. the ears need to be a little longer than needed, so you can sew them in.
Once happy with your shapes, use a little clear drying fabric glue and glue the facial features in place. Let dry.

Get ready for sewing
Once the facial features are dru, get a bit of ribbon, fold it in half and tie a knot.
Position the ears and ribbon. Then place the face on top. You may want to pin this in place, so the ears and ribbon don’t move whilst sewing.

Start sewing
I like to start sewing by the right ear, so that I can make sure I sew the ear, ribbon and second ear in place first.
I did a running stitch for this. As this looks nice and is strong enough for this type of project!

Stuff and close
Once you have sewing approx 4/5 of the way round, stuff the fox ornament gently. Don’t over stuff.
Then sew shut.

Finishing touches to the fox ears
Add the finishing touches to your fox ears with a marker pen.

Ta-daaa your simple fox ornament is finished.
I think this would look gorgeous in light blue and white for an Artic Fox Sewing project too!
