Free teddy bear crochet pattern for beginners

| | |

The lovely Craft Alotl has another fantastic free crochet pattern for beginners today – an adorable crochet bear pattern! This pattern is ideal for beginners, as it is quick and easy to make. We used super soft plushy chenille yarn to make it – which gives you a nice sized plushy bear – not just any plush bear, but an upright loaf bear plushy! But you can also use regular cotton crochet yarn – which will give you a cute small crochet bear to fit in your palm (or to make as a key ring?). As this is a small bear pattern, it is ideal for beginners to have a go at!

If you don’t fancy “scrolling” through through the web page and (the sadly necessary) ads, you can purchase this pattern in Craft Alotl’s Ravelry Store. She always makes a little happy dance when someone does this and you get an easy to print, ad-free pattern! Please note, that we use a bobble stitch as part of the bear’s arms and legs and this video is available on this website or on youtube here.

The great thing about this rather cute bear pattern, is that you can make this as a regular teddy bear.. as bears in any colour (a set of rainbow bears would be adorable) or, if you use some white, off white or cream for the bear’s body, you could make some super cute crochet polar bears too!

Yarn

To make this lovely bear crochet pattern you can use any type of yarn – whether it is a cotton yarn or a plush yarn. Obviously, the type of yarn you use will result in a different finished crochet teddy bear. But they will all be super cute, I promise you! Using super plush chenille yarn will give you that loaf bear look that is so popular! And make a super cute squishy bear plush.

We used a (discountinued) Marriner Get Cozy brand – but basically, try and find the thickest chenille yarn you can find!

It is ideally if you can get hold of two colours – one for the body of your bear and one for the bear’s muzzle!

Crochet Hook Size

You then of course, need to us a corresponding crochet hook to go with your yarn weight! We used a

7 mm hook

Safety Eyes & Yarn Needle

Get mm safety eyes to match your yarn thickness. You will also need an tapestry needle to sew on the bear’s nose.

Plush Toy Stuffing

We like to recycle old pillows and cushions as toy stuffing!

  • SC – Single Crochet
  • Inc – increase
  • Bob – Bobble Stitch (a video tutorial is embedded just below!) – the bobble stitch is used to make the bear’s arm and legs, without the need to sew them on afterwards!
  • Dec – decrease
  • Ch – chain
