Let’s make a St Patrick’s Day Sock Gnome
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a fun and whimsical craft, a St. Patrick Gnome! This adorable DIY project is simple to make with just a few basic materials and adds a festive Irish touch to your home décor.
St. Patrick’s Day is all about celebrating Irish culture, and what better way to decorate than with cute little gnomes? They’re easy to make and bring a bit of magic to your space for St. Patty’s Day.
These gnomes combine creativity with simplicity, making them a great craft for celebrating the holiday. You can customize their quirky design to suit your style, and they’re perfect for displaying on a mantelpiece or gifting to friends. Plus, the materials are super affordable and easy to find, so it’s a cost-effective and fun way to add some charm to your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations!
How to make a St Patrick Gnome
Materials you’ll need
- Unused Mop: The mop strands make the perfect fluffy beard for your gnome. Be sure to use a new, clean mop for the best results! The screw on types are the best! Alternatively, you can make yourself the equivalent, by making a “large tassle” using some yarn or string at home! But do read the full article here first before embarking on this!
- Green Sock: A festive green sock serves as the base for the gnome’s body and hat. Striped or patterned socks (though note that patterns will be “upside down” when made into a hat) can add extra charm and personality. Other colors like orange, black, or white also work well for a St. Patrick’s Day theme.
- Batting Scraps or white felt: Great for crafting a shamrock to decorate the gnome’s hat.
- Poly-fill (Optional): Fill the hat with poly-fill for a fuller or slightly slouched appearance. If you prefer, you can skip this step and let the hat hang naturally to one side. Or you can use recycled items such as old cushion stuffing, old socks/ fabrics cut up, old yarn etc
- Wood Bead: Acts as the gnome’s nose, adding a rustic, classic touch to its design. TOP TIP: You canmake your own nose using an old pair of stockings! As we show you here with the No Knit Christmas gnome!
- Embroidery Floss or Twine: Perfect for tying off the top of the sock and securing all the elements together.
- Rice: Provides weight and stability, ensuring the gnome sits firmly on any surface. I used about 4 cups of rice for a small gnome. For a medium-sized gnome, add 1–2 extra cups of rice. If you’re making a large gnome, consider using a bigger sock along with more rice to match.
Equipment
To craft your St. Patrick’s Day Gnome, you’ll also need:
- Scissors – For trimming the sock, mop strands, and batting scraps.
- Hot glue gun & hot glue sticks – For assembling the pieces and securing everything in place.
- Large recipient/bowl – This will help keep the sock upright and stable as you fill it with rice.
- Shamrock template (please DO NOT tip just enter $0 at check out) – Use this to create a charming shamrock embellishment for your gnome’s hat.

Instructions to make a no sew gnome for St Patrick’s Day

Prepare the sock: Cut the green sock at the heel, separating it into two pieces. Set the top section aside to use later as the hat.

Trim the mop strands: Cut off about half the strands from the mop, saving a few to create a pom-pom for the hat.

Create the base: Place the lower portion of the sock into a large container or bowl, then fill it with rice. Leave about an inch of space at the top to allow for tying.
Secure the base: Use twine or embroidery floss to tightly tie the top of the sock, ensuring the rice stays in place.

Add the beard: Glue the trimmed mop strands onto the top of the sock to form the gnome’s beard. Once the glue dries, unravel and fluff up the strands for a fuller effect. Trim them as needed for the perfect length.

Attach the nose: Use hot glue to secure the wooden bead in place, positioning it snugly between the mop strands as the gnome’s nose.

Craft the hat: Turn the sock’s top section inside out, insert the saved mop strands to form a pom-pom, and tie the top securely. Flip the sock right side out again, unravel the strands, and fluff them up.

If desired, fill the hat with polyfill to give it more shape.

Add the shamrock: Trace the shamrock template onto scrap batting or white felt, cut it out, and glue it to the front of the hat for a festive touch.
Assemble the gnome: Slide the decorated sock hat onto the gnome’s head, adjusting it for the perfect fit. If needed, glue the hat in place to secure it.

Craft Variations
- Rainbow Gnome: Make a fun and festive gnome by using a rainbow-colored sock for the hat and pairing it with a bright, colorful beard to celebrate the classic St. Patrick’s Day rainbow.
- Mini Gnome Set: Put together a cute set of tiny shamrock gnomes by using baby socks for smaller, charming designs.
- Rustic Gnome: For a more textured vibe, swap the sock for some scrap fabric or burlap to create a rustic, cozy-looking gnome.
- Themed Accessories Gnome: Take your gnome to the next level with fun extras like a mini leprechaun hat or sparkly glitter shamrocks for a little extra flair.

Size and how to scale
Scaling your gnome to different sizes is easy and allows you to create a variety of designs for different displays. A standard sock would make a medium gnome like mine. To make a larger gnome, simply use a bigger sock and increase the amount of rice used for the base. Adjust the size of your mop strands and other elements like the hat and beard to match the larger proportions.
For smaller gnomes, baby socks or even toddler socks are perfect. Reduce the amount of rice and trim the mop strands accordingly to maintain the proportions.
Whether you’re making them as gifts or for your own décor, these adorable gnomes are sure to spread joy and holiday cheer! So go ahead, unleash your crafting skills and have fun creating your very own gnomes.
Happy crafting!
