Dragon Corner Bookmark
Well.. if you know Red Ted Art, you probably know our love for Corner Bookmark Designs. We literally have 100s of different ideas based on the wonderful basic Origami Bookmark Corner. Recently, I decided it was time to make sure we had a classic corner bookmark for all of the Zodiac Bookmark collection. And though we have “other” dragon bookmarks, none of them were “just” the classic corner bookmark. So today, we correct this (or add to it..). And make an easy Dragon Corner Bookmark for Chinese New Year!

When making this dragon bookmark, you can use my design as a basis, but students are encouraged to explore different “dragon features” and colors to make this Dragon Bookmark craft truly their own. Experiment and have fun!
Learning Objectives and Educational Opportunities
As with all our crafts, having some CREATIVE fun is the key objective of making our activities. They are designed for some “down time” to complement the lesson plans and seasons throughout the year. So as always.. students are encourage to have fun and explore this craft as creatively as they wish.
However, are are some of the more formal learning opportunities:
- Origami elements focus on basic maths skills & symmetry
- Reading and following instructions
- Fine motor skills
- Fun seasonal activity Lunar New Year themed complimentary activity

Basic Origami Corner Bookmark
As mentioned, we first revisit our classic Origami Bookmark Corner. First you will need to make a square out of your paper. Corner bookmarks need squares of paper, but here we show you how to create that perfect square!!

- Take your A5 sheet of paper and fold over one corner to create a triangle.
- Cut off the excess and rotate your triangle so the long edge is at the bottom and the right angle faces up. Make sure the top of the triangle is looking up and you have the long edge running perpendicular.

- Fold the lower right corner up to meet the top right angled corner.
- Repeat for the left side.
- Fold these two back open.
- Flip down ONE of the top sheets and crease.

- Now fold the flaps you created back up and tuck INTO your bookmark.
- Repeat for the other side
- Congratulations, you have just created your basic Origami Corner Bookmark!
How to make a Dragon Corner Bookmark
Now you have made the basic bookmark in your desired dragon color, we need to turn it into a DRAGON. We chose the classic red dragon, but you can of course make a yellow dragon, black dragon or green dragon for Chinese New Year too! Pick the color you want!
First shape the bookmark into a dragon’s head:

First we need to shape the corner bookmark. Flip it so that the full square/ diamond is facing your way. Make sure the chunky part of the bookmark is point up.
Cut a little curved edge out of the top of the bookmark. This will shape the dragon head to give it some dragon “ears”.

Cut the features: Next it is time to take your colored papers and cut out some shapes!
You will need some horns/ eyebrows – here we cut some simple yellow shapes – a bit like a banana!
You will need some dragon eyes – we cut some green tear drops, that we then shaped. As well as some white circles as dragon eye balls.
Next a dragon moustache – in blue. Think wiggly blue lines.
All these shapes are approximates and you can think of your own versions!

Start to “build your dragon”.

Once you are happy with the positioning of your shapes, glue the shapes in place and see the dragon come to life.

Add the finishing details to your dragon with a black pen.
All you need is:
- Two black pupils
- Some black curves to outline the nose shape
- Two “C”s for the nostrils

And your Dragon is finished!
