Origami Bookmark Tutorial

We have our classic origami bookmark tutorial video on auto play. This forms the basis of ALL or corner bookmark designs. The step by step instructions are below.

How to make a dreidel corner bookmark step by step instructions

We begin with the classic and super simple Origami Bookmark Corner! We have the step by step photos below or check out the video on auto play!

Take piece of paper (origami paper or regular priner paepr) in the desired based colour for your dreidel bookmark. I choose a medium blue and a dark blue to make these corner bookmarks for Hanukkah. You will also need some scrap pieces of paper in contrasting colours..

Begin by making your bookmark corner- step by step instructions:

First you will need to make a square out of your paper. Corner bookmarks need squares of paper, but here we show you how to create that perfect square!!

Creating a square from rectangular paper to make a bookmark corner
  • Take your A5 sheet of paper and fold over one corner to create a triangle.
  • Cut off the excess and rotate your triangle so the long edge is at the bottom and the right angle faces up. Make sure the top of the triangle is looking up and you have the long edge running perpendicular.
  • Fold the lower right corner up to meet the top right angled corner.
  • Repeat for the left side.
  • Fold these two back open.
  • Flip down ONE of the top sheets and crease.

  • Now fold the flaps you created back up and tuck INTO your bookmark.
  • Repeat for the other side.
  • Congratulations, you have just created your basic Origami Corner Bookmark!

Decorate the Bookmark as a Hanukkah Dreidel

Let’s shape the bookmark first

Now you have mastered the basic origami corner bookmark, we need to turn it into a Dreidel! We begin by shaping it.

trim the bookmark corner edge

Trim off the a strip from the edge. Make sure it is the “correct” edge, so that it still fits over the top right corner of your book. You can see in the images, which bit we trimmed. We took of about 1/4.

find the dreidel point

Gently fold one end of the bookmark in half to find the “mid point”. Then using a pencil, sketch out two diagnoals to make the Dreidel tip.

trim the dreidel point

Trim off the tips (so cut off two triangles), to give that basic Dreidel point. Take the cut off strip from before and shape into a rectangle. Glue this to the back of the bookmark to make the Dreidel spinning top.

Now it is time to decorate your dreidel bookmark

This is a great opportunity to taylor the craft to the age group you are working with. You may want to explore primary colours and shapes with younger children. Older children, can work on more intricate designs. They can combine colourful paper with drawings of a menorah or alternatively can give writing hebrew a go!

decorate your dreidel

We opted for the simpler shapes. I traced the dreidel corner bookmark onto yellow paper and use this as a guide to cut out a SMALLER yellow dreidel. Then also added a little pink circle.

decorate with shapes

For the second bookmark corner we used a square and a circle. You can use coins to trace (introducing the concept of gelt) if you wish.

As mentioned at this point, you can also add some of the traditional Dreidel Hebrew words too.
