Newspaper Cactus Art for Dad

Hi Friends! I’m Vin Giannetto from Young School Art and I’m thrilled to be back here at Red Ted Art to bring you a fun Father’s Day craft to celebrate the 31 Days of Dad craft extravaganza! This easy Cactus Newspaper Craft is perfect for any Dad or Grandpa and is sure to be treasured for years to come! Handmade gifts really are the best gifts! Our cactus will be made out of old newspaper.

I love a craft that emphasizes the importance of reusing and recycling! What also makes this gift so special is that it can be customized to highlight dad’s favorite hobby or interest!  Whether he loves fishing, cooking, art, or sports, this craft covers all of the above! So, gather some newspaper out of the trash and let’s get started!

Newspaper and art supplies for art project

Newspaper Cactus Craft Step by Step Directions:

Step 1: Begin by drawing your cactus shape onto a piece of newspaper. I recommend using the sports section or the comics. I’ve included a few different cactus shape options.

Step 2: It’s time to paint! Use watercolors to paint the cactus green. Cut out the cactus when it’s dry and glue it onto a piece of blue paper.

Step 3: Now the real fun begins! Adding details and accessories will really make your cactus come alive! Take a moment to think about what your Dad loves to do in his free time or what he does for a living. Perhaps he’s a huge sports fan, a star fisherman, a businessman, a great chef, or an artist like yourself. Each detail that you create for your cactus will help represent your dad’s interests. As a result, each cactus will be unique, just like Dad himself! Draw the details on the construction paper, cut them out, and glue them to the cactus.

Optional Free Printable: I’ve created this .pdf for you to use if you wish. Simply color, cut, and glue the items you would like to add to your cactus.

Step 4: Now that your cactus is all decked out in details, use markers to add the spines. Little dashes around the edges of the cactus will do the trick!
