7 Paper Plate Snakes Twirler Crafts
Soooo who doesn’t love a twirler or whirligig!! We have a number of seasonal paper plate whirlers that we have made over the years.. but one we haven’t done, as it has been done so well by many already, is the paper plate snake twirler!! A wonderful childhood classic, that everyone should have a go at! Especially this year, as 2025 is the Year of the Snake for Chinese New Year! So fun. So I am sharing with you the best Paper Plate Snakes to inspire you to have a go!
Let’s make some Paper Plate Snake Whirligigs for Chinese New Year
Painted Paper Plate Snake
First up with have painted paper plate snakes with PBS kids! A nice and easy one – start off with your snake outline on the paper plates.. and then let the kids go wild with their paints and decore. You can paint stripes, dots, or all one color! Add paper eyes at the end for some eco friendliness.
Mixed Media Paper Plate Snake Twirler
Mombrite uses watercolors and marker pens for their paper plate snakes! I love this approach as it introduces the concept of mixed media to kids. Ie you don’t have to use ONE art supply at a time, but can mix and match your resources. Again, it is helpful to draw your snake outline onto your plate first.

Crafts on Sea as a wonderful print making snake! The effect of printing with pom poms (did you guess it was pom poms), looks fabulous. It really gives the snake skin a fabulous texture. And I love all the different colors used to make this paper plate snake whirligig. So fun!

If you haven’t got time for paints or you don’t have the space to get paint messy, then Craftulate has the paper plate snake craft for you! I love this version as you can do it two ways – cut out paper shapes to stick – great for those scissor handling skills.. or you can tear your paper – which is great for finger strengthing skills. You don’t have any paper plates, I here you say?!! Fear not This Crafty Family has your back. Grab some large pieces of colorful construction paper, some marker pens and you can make these paper snake twirlers quickly adn easily. This is another great “low mess” option. I also think these make great “doodle snakes”, as kids can take their time creating wonderful patterns.
