Educational Elements of this fun Easter Counting Activity
As with many crafts and Easter activities here on Red Ted Art and Montessori From the Heart, there are MANY educational benefits of having a go at this activity:
- Seasonal fun – first and foremost, let’s focus on FUN! Any seasonal activity is a great way to help children engage with traditions and the seasons
- Counting – the most “obivious” benefit of this activity
- Pince grip/ finger strengthening – working the little clothes pegs is great for those finger strengthening skills and concentration
- Tactile/ Sensory – you can go wild with the different Easter counting boards and add lots of different textures, themes and shapes (these DIY Sensory Blocks may give you some more ideas)
- Colours and shapes – a great opportunity to also discuss colors and shapes with your toddlers this Easter – e.g. “Can you count the orange carrots”? or “What color is your favourite pom pom” etc

Supplies Needed to make your Tactile Spring Counting Boards:
- recycled cardboard
- spring themed bits and pieces – e.g. pipecleaners for carrots, swirls etc, wooden ladybugs, tactile pom poms, mini easter chicks, mini ducks, googly eyes etc
- mini clothes pegs or regular ones (for different experience – you can get colored ones too to match each board – e.g. yellow for chicks etc)
- a marker pen
- hot glue gun
How to make your Sensory Easter Counting Boards:
Make your cardboard tiles
Simply cut your cardboard into 3inch by 4inch pieces – this is a perfect size, to fit your Spring loose items easily, but also allow your child to be able to hold the sensory tiles comfortably
Mark your counting squares
Draw a horizontal line and then 3 vertical lines to make three counting squares per board. Add the numbers later.
Select your counting items/ make your counting items
Review the supplies you have to hand and order them.. so you have different counts from 1 to 10. For example:

1 Blue pipecleaner bunny – we combined pom poms, googly eyes and pipecleaners to make this cute bunny!

4 little pipecleaner carrots to count! Here you only need one orange pipecleaner wrapped into a cone – to short green bits glued to the top to make a pipecleaner carrot.

8 Pipecleaner swirls – encourage your toddler to feel the swirls – move in circular motions and discuss the colors!

6 Fluffy Chicks – I know my kids would love this one the most! The little fluffy chicks that you get in the stores this time of year are SO CUTE! They come in all colors these days.. so you could also use it to discuss different colors!

Check out all our tactile counting board ideas here!! You have the 5 tactile pom poms. 7 Wooden Eggs, 9 cute wooden ladybugs etc.
How to use your tactile counting boards with your toddler
Get your toddler to choose one of the sensory boards.
Get the child to touch each item and count out allowed as they go.
Once they have go to the correct number, confirm this.
Then get the child to use the mini pegs to peg to the correct number for number recognition and pince grip skills.
Finally – you can discuss extras such as colors and shapes!
Extension ideas:
Why not peg ALL your sensory boards to a washing line / string and use it as a fun little Easter decoration bunting when not in use! FUN!
