Yarn Wrapped Flowers Video Tutorial

As with many of my crafts (sadly not all! ha), I do have a video tutorial here (as well as on YouTube), but have also created step by step photos and written instructions in case you prefer these!

Yarn Wrapped Flowers Step by Step

You will see that make your own flower template is really easy and you and your preschooler will making these yarn wrapped flowers in now time!

make your own template

Make your own template – trace two circles

You will need to find some bowls or cups in different sizes to trace. As it turns out a regular cereal bowl and the BASE of a kids’ cup I had felt like perfect dimensions to me.

Trace the bowl.

Find the centre of the circle (you may have to move the cup a few times) and trace as well.

You should now have to concentric circles.

mark out your petals

Mark out the petals distances and cut

Using a pen add details to the centre circle for the flower face.

Now you will need to mark out where the petals will go. The easiest way to space these out, is to mark “top bottom left and right” first (white arrows).

Then go half way between these to get teh 45 degree angles (black arrows).

Cut out your basic circle.

cut and make petals

Cut the petal shapes

Now you need to make your petals. Make straight cuts from your 8 marks to the centre of the flower.

Now shape each of these cuts into a petal.

wrap the yarn

Make small cuts & start yarn wrapping

Time to get yarn wrapping. You will need to make small cuts into each petal (so it looks a bit like a feather) to help “trap” the wrapped yarn. Else the yarn will slide around a bit.

We made these little cuts, as we went along. Wrapping one petal at the time.

When all petals have been wrapped, cut the string and tie a knot on the back.

add finishing touches

Add finishing touches to your yarn wrapped flowers

Now cut some more string and tie one of the petals for hanging.

Add any finishing touches if you wish.. I cut out some rosy cheeks and glue those on!
