Crochet Food – Ice Cream Octopus
I don’t know about you, but I love love love the super fun and super cute crochet food trend on instagram… I am SURE You are familiar with the tacos dinosaur and all the fun that comes with turning every day amigurumi crochet animals into food.. well, today, I have a real treat for you – come and make this chocolate chip ice cream octopus with us today – a fantastic little sample project form the new Crochet Buffet Book!

Crochet Buffet by Naomi Fox
I am sure you know Naomi Fox as Croutons Crochet on Instagram already! Naomi is the super fun crocheter behind the viral Dinosaur Tacos already mentioned.. and now, finally, you get to grab yourself this uber popular pattern, plus 19 of his friends in one hand format and book: Crochet Buffet!! I mean, I need my copy TODAY!!
It is so hard to pick a favourite project.. Would you make the Bagel Beagle first? Surely it has to be the BLT Rex? Or wait, no.. how about the Fried Egg Frog? The designs are just too cute, funny and quirky! And are bound to make you giggle. I reckon these all would make great crochet gifts, are super fun to sell at market stalls (just sew on the eyes to be extra safe!!).
The book also takes you through some of the key stitches used in the book – so you will learn all about the bobble stitch and picot stitch and be able to make these fun projects.
The best bit about the taster project today – is that you can make the mini octopus on it’s own too.. it is super adorable “as is” and actually makes for a no sew octopus crochet project too! That said, I LOVE it’s jaunty little Ice Cream Cone hat, so I definitely want to make it as a foodie octopus crochet project!!

Ice Cream Octo-Cone
With a waffle cone hat and melting ice cream arms, this food-animal pairing was “mint” to be! Although I made mine mint chocolate chip, you can easily change the flavor (or turn the chocolate chips into sprinkles) just by using different yarn colors!
Skill Level 1/5 (Beginner)
Finished Size 5.5″ x 4.7″ (14 cm x 12 cm)
Materials Needed
Yarn: 6-weight super bulky chenille yarn, Bernat Blanket, 220 yds (201 m) per 300g skein
- BEIGE: Bernat Blanket in Sand
- GREEN: Bernat Blanket in Spring Grass
- BROWN: Bernat Blanket in Taupe
Hook 5.5 mm (I) hook (or 2.5 mm down from the yarn’s recommended hook size)

Ice Cream Cone
With BEIGE yarn, make a MR.
Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR. [4]
Rnd 2: (Sc, inc) x 2. [6]
Rnd 3: (Sc, inc, sc) x 2. [8]
Rnd 4: (3 sc, inc) x 2. [10]
Rnd 5: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 2. [12]
Rnd 6: (5 sc, inc) x 2. [14]
Rnd 7: (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 2. [16]
Rnd 8: (7 sc, inc) x 2. [18]
Rnd 9: (4 sc, inc, 4 sc) x 2. [20]
Rnd 10: (9 sc, inc) x 2. [22]
Stuff firmly. FO, leaving a tail for sewing.
Octopus Head/ Body
With GREEN yarn, make a MR.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in MR. [8]
Rnd 2: 8 inc. [16]
Rnd 3: (Sc, inc) x 8. [24]
Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 8. [32]
Rnds 5–11 (7 Rnds): 32 sc. [32]
Place a stitch marker into the FLO of the first stitch of Rnd 11. This will help mark where the tentacles will be attached later.
Insert safety eyes between Rnds 8 and 9 with roughly 6 sts between them.
Rnd 12: Working in the BLO, 16 dec. [16]
Stuff firmly.
Rnd 13: 8 dec. [8]
FO and sew the hole shut.
Octopus Arms
Hold the head/body upside down. With a sl st, attach GREEN yarn to a FLO stitch left over from Rnd 11 of the head/body.
Rnd 1: (3 hdc, [2 hdc] in the next st) x 8. [40]
Rnd 2: (Ch 4. Starting in the second ch from the hook: hdc, hdc in the 2 remaining ch, sl st into the next st of Rnd 1, sc, [2 hdc] in the next st, sc, sl st) x 8. [72]
FO and weave in ends.
Assembly
Chocolate Chips/Sprinkles (Optional)
Using BROWN yarn, embroider chocolate chips onto the head/body by going over 2 sts in random directions all around.
Cone
Sew the cone onto the top of the head/body using the tail end of the cone. To give it a melting effect, attach it off to one side, around Rnds 2–6. Weave in the remaining ends.
