Alleshen Hamilton wrote this lovely Quirky Amigurumi book off the back of her succcess on instagram and etsy as Ghee Beans Crafty where you will probably be familiar with the antics of her most adorable shrimp crochet pattern. Her work is filled with quirky fun, full of creativity and humour. And these all come together in Quirky Amigurumi. Come and make her favourite characters, including Shoko the Shrimp, Bertram the Banana Slug and Shirley the Soy Sauce.

Lana The Lobster
Like many crustaceans, lobsters molt or shed their shells. It’s kind of hard for a lobster made of yarn to molt, but you can make it a bunch of little vests and change them up once in a while instead. I promise, it’s extremely satisfying pulling the little claws and legs through the arm holes of the vest! Don’t worry, you won’t get pinched because this lobster has manners!
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long (including antennae) and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide (including legs)
Supplies needed to make a crochet lobster
The projects in this book are made using super chunky chenille yarn.
- Yarn – Super bulky chenille yarn (weight 6) in red and yellow. Alleshen uses Parfait Chunky by Premier Yarns (3.5 oz | 100 g | 131 yds | 120 m per skein) in Poppy (red) and Sunshine (yellow).
- 5 mm (H) crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- 12 mm safety eyes
- Polyester fiberfill
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Stitches used to make this crocheted Lobster
- st – stitch
- sl st – slip stitch
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- inc – increase, make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch
- dec – decrease, combine two stitches into one single crochet stitch
- BLO – back loops only
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet

Make the Lobster’s Body
Round 1: In red, sc 6 in a magic ring. (6 sts)
Round 2: (Sc 2, inc) x 2. (8 sts)
Round 3: (Sc 1, inc) x 4. (12 sts)
Round 4: Sc 1 in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 5: (Sc 2, inc) x 4. (16 sts)
Round 6: Sc 1. Work the first arm as follows:
Ch 13. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 5. Ch 4. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 3. Sl st 7 down the rest of the original ch. Sl st 1 into the initial st.
Sc 5 on the body. Work the second arm as follows:
Ch 11. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 3. Ch 6. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 5. Sl st 7 down the rest of the original ch. Sl st 1 into the initial st.
Sc 10 on the body. You are now at the end of round 6. (16 sts)

The first arm. When making the claw, be sure to sl st into the next ch, and not the one you made the ch 4 in.
Now you will work the first of 3 total leg rounds.
Round 7: Sc 1. Work the first leg as follows:
{Ch 5. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 4. Sl st 1 into the initial st.}
Sc 6 on the body. Repeat the portion between the brackets { } to make the second leg. Sc 9 on the body. (16 sts)
Round 8: (Sc 7, inc) x 2. (18 sts)
Making sure they are centered with the arms, place your safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4, about 4 sts apart.
Round 9: Sc 1. Work the third leg as follows:
{Ch 5. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 4. Sl st 1 into the initial st.}
Sc 7 on the body. Repeat the portion between the brackets { } to make the fourth leg. Sc 10 on the body. (18 sts)
Round 10: Sc 1 in each st around. (18 sts)
Round 11: Sc 1. Work the fifth leg as follows:
{Ch 5. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 4. Sl st 1 into the initial st.} Sc 7 on the body. Repeat the portion between the brackets { } to make the sixth and final leg. Sc 10 on the body. (18 sts)
Round 12: (Sc 4, dec) x 3. (15 sts)
Begin to stuff the body gradually. Start stuffing more lightly once you get to the tail if you want it to lie flat.
Round 13: In the BLO, sc 1 in each st around. (15 sts)
Rounds 14-15: Sc 1 in each st around for 2 rounds. (15 sts)
Round 16: In the BLO, sc 1 in each st around. (15 sts)
Round 17: (Sc 3, dec) x 3. (12 sts)
Round 18: Sc 1 in each st around. (12 sts)
Round 19: In the BLO, sc 1 in each st around. (12 sts)
You will now work the round with the fins.
Round 20: Dec, sc 5, dec. Work the fins as follows:
(Ch 5. Starting in the third ch from the hook, hdc 1, dc 1, hdc 1. Sc 1 on the body) x 3.
Finish off and leave a tail for sewing. Flatten the tail and sew the opening shut along the edge, just below the fins.

Make the Lobster’s ANTENNAE (MAKE 2)

Insert your hook into a st on round 2, slightly in front of an eye. Using red, ch 10. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl st 9. Sl st 1 back into where you first inserted your hook.
Finish off and weave in any ends. Repeat on the other side to make the second antenna.

Lana the Lobster now needs her VEST
Row 1: In yellow, ch 18. Starting in the third ch from the hook, dc 5. Ch 1. Skip the next ch and dc 4. Ch 1. Skip the next ch and dc 5. Ch 2 and turn. (16 sts)
Row 2: Dc 4. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 5. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 4. Dc 2 in the next st. Ch 2 and turn. (17 sts)
Row 3: Dc 5. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 6. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 3. Dc 2 in the next st. Ch 2 and turn. (18 sts)
Row 4: Dc 5. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 6. Ch 1. Skip the next st and dc 5. (18 sts)
With the wrong side facing out, fold in half and join the two edges of the sweater with sc sts. Finish off and weave in the ends. Flip the vest right side out and dress up your lobster!
