How to make Pom Pom Sheep

| |

It has been a while since our last Sheep Craft for kids! So with Spring in the air we decided to make some cute (and of course) Easy Pom Pom Sheep!

Learn how to make Pom Pom Sheep today! You can use any pom pom making method, but we love using Pom Pom Makers or the Cardboard Pom Poms method best!

Pom Pom Sheep Pile

We have lots of lovely Pom Pom DIY ideas for you here! And you may especially like our Pom Pom Sheep Wreath that we made after making these cute little fluffy sheep!!!

To make these yarn sheep, you will need:

  • Yarn/ wool in desired colours! And colours go…
  • Some black felt or black card
  • Some black pipecleaners (or felt or card)
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Glue gun OR PVA Glue – we used a glue gun for speed, but PVA works just fine
  • Pom Pom Makers or DIY Cardboard Pom Pom Making Discs

How to make Pom Pom Sheep using a Pom Pom Maker

If you do not, have a pom pom maker, fear not!!! You can make this exact same Pom Pom Lamb/ Sheep using two cardboard discs. I show you how to use and make those over here.

How to use a pom pom maker

Take your pom pom maker, connect the two halves, open the “flaps” and start wrapping your yarn around one side. I like to make them quite full for a fluffy pom pom. BUT you do need to take care when tying and cutting, when you fill the pom pom maker to the max like I do, you run the risk of accidentally making it all fall apart before you can tie it off.

Once fully wrapped, close the that side.

Repeat on the other side and close.

Pom pom making is fun

Using sharp scissors (we like small scissors best for this), cut the yarn open. Be sure the flaps of the maker don’t “pop open”.

Tying off a pom pom

Take some yarn or string (sometimes yarn rips.. so string could be better – like bakers twine). Guide it between the two halves. And tie off.

You can leave the excess yarn to use for hanging your sheep or trim it off. Trim any extra if you wish!

Adding the Pom Pom Lamb’s face and legs

If you don’t have any pipecleaners you can either – skip the legs (the pom pom lamb is still cute) OR cut some from felt or black card and use those instead!

Turning a pom pom into a sheep

Cut out a sheep face – think of it as an oval with two round bits on the sides. Draw a template first if that is easier. I also cut down one pipecleaner into quarters. You will need two quarters per sheep. If you don’t have googly eyes, you can add a dap of paint for eyes or stick on paper ones.

Glue the eyes to the felt face and glue to the pom pom. PVA glue is fine for this, but a hot glue gun is quick.

Pom pom sheep legs

Fold your quarter pipecleaner in half. Fold the ends up for small feet. Then, find the right position on the pom pom for the feet. Spread the wool apart. Add a little glue and insert the tip of the fit… secure the wool around it. Repeat for the second feet.

Done! You have made yourself a Pom Pom Lamb/ Pom Pom Sheep. You can have fun with lots of different colours!
