The great thing about this DIY Snowglobe ornament, is that you can customise to suit your craft supplies, I give you some top tips as we go through the supplies list!

Why make Photo Snowglobes Ornaments?

I recently had a chat to some friends about Christmas and what they really enjoyed about the Christmas season.. and one friend mentioned how much joy she had each year, when she got the Christmas decorations out and “found” her child’s photo ornaments they had made at school. She was SO SOOOOO thankful to the teachers in preschool and Reception (that is an early years class here in the UK) for taking the time to make these with the kids and send the photo ornaments home. She said they were her favourite homemade ornament without a doubt! The other friends chimed in agreeing (or expressing regret that they didn’t have any).

So this Photo Ornaments Ideas (mini) series is dedicated to this keepsake memory makers. It sounds so cliche.. but the kids really do grow up too fast!

I love today’s Photo Snowglobe Craft, as it lends itself to be used with individual photos or photos of siblings. Or make some with your pets too! How cute would that be!

Note: as with all Red Ted Art crafts, I encourage you to work with supplies you have to hand! Use our craft instructions as a guide, but do make it your own!! And please do tag me on instagram with your makes.

  • A clear sheet of plastics – this can be anything from, a plastic lid (yoghurt pot lids are great – esp from those large round pots), overhead project type plastic etc
  • Some cardboard or white card – here we used a paper plate, but any card will do
  • A photo of the kids in a suitable size
  • Either a hole punch and white paper or some sequins for “snowflakes”
  • A ribbon or pipecleaner
  • Scissors and glue or double sided tape/ glue dots (NOTE: you may have to experiment with different glues to see what sticks to your plastic the best! For us the double sided tape worked the best)

I have popped a simple circle template with 3 different circle sizes for free onto gumroad – simply enter $0 at check out:

How to make a Photo Snowglobe Ornament

Once again, we have a quick and easy video tutorial on auto play for you on auto play or you can check out the step by step photo instructions below!

Step by Step Photo Instructions for your snowglobe photo ornament

cut out your basic globe

Begin by cutting out a circle in the desired snowglobe size (I like to make them “not too smal”, so you can really see the photo well. You can use a small plate to trace if you need help with the circle – you can grab three circle sizes here by adding $0 at check out.

Cut out the snowy globe base

Now trace another circle onto the white card – use the circle you have cut already or use the templates again. Once you have your cardboard circle cut a wiggly line across it. You may want to sketch it with a pencil first! You want this wiggly line to go across the both 1/3 of the circle. So there is enough space for a photo to be added.

print your photo and cut out the children

Take your photo and cut out the people in the photo!

glue together your separate parts

Glue the photo onto the plastic disc, then add the white “wiggly” bit representing snow on top. Not all glues will stick to the plastic. You may have to try different onces. I found that double sided tape worked the best! Though you may find your hot glue gun works too or try the supplies you have to hand – please do a test project before you do this in a classroom. Ha!

add sequins as snow

You can use sequins as snow or some paper hole punches to add some snowflakes to your globe.

Finally, you can add a nice bow to the front of your snowglobe! We love this pipecleaner bow!

add a little bow - made from ribbon or a pipe cleaner

For hanging your photo snowoglobe ornament – make a hole to the top of the ornament with a hole punch and tie a ribbon to the top.
