Oh my! How we love Totoro. If you are Ghibli Studio movie’s fan and love My Neighbour Totoro, this is the cutest Back to School Bookmark to make today!!! We love DIY School Supplies. If you don’t know what I am talking about.. then you have seriously missed out.. and it is high time you get a copy of this marvelous movie (US/ UK affiliate links, you are welcome!). Anyway, I digress. We adore Corner Bookmarks here on Red Ted Art.. we made these a couple of years ago and forgot to share them (again! ha!!). And as before.. it is time to rectify this. Totoro Corner Bookmark – Materials

Grey, blue and white paper – the grey approx 15 x 15cm + scraps, the blue 12 x 12cm and the white 5 x 5cm
Scraps for the Totoro and friends’ ears, body and eyes
Pens
Scissors
Glue stick

How to make a Totoro Corner Bookmark

Totoro Bookmark corner step by step instructions

Pick the right colored paper for your Totoro bookmark – grey for Totoro and blue and white for his friends…

Begin by making a classic Origami Bookmark with a white piece of paper. We like using paper roughly 15 x 15cm in size.. but any size will do.

First you will need to make a square out of your paper. Corner bookmarks need squares of paper, but here we show you how to create that perfect square!!

Creating a square from rectangular paper to make a bookmark corner

Take your A5 sheet of paper and fold over one corner to create a triangle.
Cut off the excess and rotate your triangle so the long edge is at the bottom and the right angle faces up. Make sure the top of the triangle is looking up and you have the long edge running perpendicular.

Fold the lower right corner up to meet the top right angled corner.
Repeat for the left side.
Fold these two back open.
Flip down ONE of the top sheets and crease.

How to make an Origami Bookmark Corner — Final steps of the Origami Bookmark Corner

Now fold the flaps you created back up and tuck INTO your bookmark.
Repeat for the other side

Turn your Corner Bookmark into Totoro and his friends

Begin by shaping the top of you bookamrk – snip a little off!

Cut out some Totoro ears and glue one. Totoro ears are quite long and pointy. But shape them the way you want!

Now it is time for the white “tummy” part of Toroto. I first cut a square that fits neatly to the bookmark and then shaped it into a quart of a circle out (using your bookmark as a guide).

Next cut out some white eyes and glue on (you can use a hole punch for these too?). These can be a little fiddly, so you have to give it a couple of goes.
