Cinnamon Salt Dough Recipe Ingredients
- 2 cups of plain/ all purpose flour (do NOT use self-rising flour)
- 1 cup of salt
- upto 1.5 cups of cinnamon (yes a LOT of cinnamon! If you only use a table spoons, the dough won’t color brown)
- up to 2 cups of warm water*
- varnish (optional)
- oil (optional for PLAY DOUGH)**
*) please note the UP TO! It is an easy mistake to pour ALL your water in in one go and then you are left with a gloopy mess (which of course can be super fun to play with, but isn’t great for making cinnamon ornaments with!!). Depending on how much cinnamon you add, you will ned 3/4 cup to 2 cups of water. I think mine ended up with about 1.5cups of water!!
**) ALSO: should you choose to use this gorgeous Cinnamon Salt Dough recipe for some playdough fun, you may want to add a little oil to make it extra smooth and lovely to work with. I haven’t tried baking the cinnamon play dough, so only add oil, if you intend to only play with it.

How to make cinnamon salt dough for Christmas Ornament making
Add your flour, salt and cinnamon into a mixing bowl. You can add anything between 1 table spoon of cinnamon to the full 1.5 cups of cinnamon and it is a question of preference – how strong you want your ornaments to smell and also how dark you want your ornaments to be!
We used 1.5 cups.
Mix it all up.
Pour in the warm water bit by bit.
As mentioned above – it is an easy mistake to pour ALL your water in in one go and then you are left with a gloopy mess (which of course can be super fun to play with, but isn’t great for making cinnamon ornaments with!!). Depending on how much cinnamon you add, you will ned 3/4 cup to 2 cups of water. I think mine ended up with about 1.5cups of water!!
Once you have a nice smooth dough, it is ready to roll and cut into Christmas Ornaments.
Making Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments
NOTE: when the Cinnamon Dough bakes in the oven, it will become lighter in colour. If you wish to have the darker cinnamon ornaments, you need to varnish your finished craft.
Roll the dough out and cut with your cookie cutter shapes.
Make a hole with a chopstick or straw.
Bake at 200F or 100C and keep turning.
NOTE: the dough will become lighter as it bakes. This is the salt moving to the surface. You can “reverse” this by varnishing the finished salt dough items!
I hope you enjoyed this Cinnamon Dough Recipe! It smells absolutely gorgeous!
