On to our easy yarn wrapped birds!
Supplies needed for these Easter Chick Decorations:
The newspaper element of this crafts, means you use up less of your yarn and makes this craft more economical and eco friendly!
- A sheet of newspaper
- Yarn scraps
- Felt Scraps (you could use scraps of card instead)
- 2 Beads (optional) & a little tape
- Scissors
- Good glue
Note: we made our little newspaper birds wrapped in ONE color of yarn, you can of course double up on your yarn and use lots of different colors – either after each other or at the same time! As with the whole Best Makes Ever series, WORK with what you ALREADY HAVE!

How To Make a Cute Yarn Bird
So let’s start on this super cute Easter chick decoration! We love working with both yarn and newspapers! This makes a great little Easter Newspaper Craft for sure!
Shape your newspaper into a ball
Try and make your newspaper ball as tight as possible and as round as possible.
Insert the yarn and start yarn wrapping the bird
Find a little gap in the newspaper ball and “insert” the yarn. You do not need to glue it, just make sure you hold it in place for the first wrap or two.
Then start yarn wrapping the newspaper ball. Be sure to keep turning it to have an even coverage of your newspaper ball with yarn.
Knot off the yarn from your yarn ball
Once you are happy with your yarn ball, cut the thread.
Thread through once and knot off.
Keep a little of the yarn for hanging (so don’t cut it too short).
Cut your felt shapes for the bird features
Now cut out some felt shapes for your bird (you could use cardboard for this too), you will need:
- a beak (diamond shaped, as we will fold this in half)
- two eyes
- two wings (these are like three bump hearts with the tips cut off)
Glue on your bird features
Start by gluing on the beak – but be SURE to check how the bird will hang first, so you don’t glue it in the wrong place.
Fold the beak diamond in half, add a little glue to fold and secure in place.
Glue eyes.
Glue on wings!
Add dangly feet to your cute yarn bird ornament
I love this little “hack” of adding some tape to the end of your yarn to make the beading of feet easier! Simply wrap tape to the end of the yarn and trim a little to neaten it off and have a “shoe lace” effect.
Now you can add the first bead.
Then thread the yarn through bottom of the body.
Add the second bead and knot off.
You can pull the yarn legs, to make sure they are the right length.
