Poppy Suncatchers for Preschoolers

| | |

If you are looking for some Poppy Crafts for Kids, look no further. We have collated a great election of Remembrance Day Activities for you, which predominately focusses on the poppy as an iconic symbol of commemoration. It also explains why the Poppy was chosen as a symbol. Today, we have these lovely Poppy Suncatchers for Preschoolers (although, I think ALL children will enjoy making these). I have also created a handy printable for you – to make things easier. If working with younger kids – adults should do the prep work. Older kids should manage it all by themselves. I think the DIY Poppy Suncatcher look gorgeous just on their own but also fabulous as a group!

DIY Poppy Suncatchers for Preschoolers

Depending on the age group and number of children in your group you may want to prep more or less of these – for example, older children can cut out their own paper poppy outlines and younger children can either tear or cut their own tissue paper (great for fine motor skills either way). If you have limited time and are working with a bigger group, you may want to prep all your self.

  1. Cut your Poppy outlines out of the black paper – we managed to fit 3 on each sheet of A4 paper. And used the “cut outs” to make the black centre of the Poppy! (if you are really careful, you could actually make another set of smaller poppies out the centre, and use the “leaf centre” for the large poppies).
  2. Using masking tape, tape down your contact paper – sticky side facing up. Make it as small or large as you like! eg one per child or a large sheet for everyone to work on!

  1. Get the children to tear or cut the red tissue paper – smaller squares are good. We liked adding a little bit of pink tissue paper and dark red tissue paper to our poppy suncatchers. But single colours would look lovely too.

  1. Start sticking our poppy suncatcher together.
  2. OPTIONAL: if you want you can add a layer of glue on top of your tissue paper – but tissue paper like pink goes transparent if you do. But it keeps a bit better long term. We did it on one and it looks nice!
  3. Cut our your DIY Poppy Suncatchers – either leave a small rim of contact paper (so it can stick directly to a window) or cut out exactly and secure your lovely Poppy Craft with bluetak or similar!
