Another Paper Craft day and another DIY Bookmark Idea day (long gone are the days of our Toilet Paper Roll Crafts obsession??? I still can’t throw away TP Rolls.. teehee), but once again I digress.
Today’s Paper Bookmark Idea is one that has been brewing for weeks if not months – Harry Potter Bookmarks!
Yes, we all love Harry Potter and we adore new Harry Potter Craft ideas (our Harry Potter Wands are most definitely my favourite but I think today’s bookmarks come a close second!). These Harry Potter Bookmarks explore the Harry Potter House colours – so Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherine and Ravenclaw and are based on a gorgeous and EASY Paper Chevron Bookmark DIY (this chevron bookmark is in fact “nothing else but paper weaving with 4 strands and looks fabulous).
We used the Harry Potter house colours and also printed off some house badges (printable below), but I think they look great JUST in the house colours and without the Harry Potter house badges – perfect for those of you who do not have access to a printer.
We also have both a paper chevron bookmark video tutorial, as well step by step photos of how to make a chevron bookmark. So you can choose which medium you prefer!
DIY Harry Potter Bookmark – materials needed
- Per bookmark you need four strips of paper, 2 of each of the house colours
- 1cm strip approximately 25cm long (cut 1cm strips from the side of an A4 sheet of paper)
- A little glue
- Optional: the Harry Potter House Badges (I created a selection of house badges for you to print off, as I know everyone has favourites
The Harry Potter house colours we used –
- For the Slytherine Bookmark – Green and Grey
- For the Hufflepuff Bookmark – Yellow and Black
- For the Gryffindor Bookmark – Marroon and Yellow
- For the Ravenclaw Bookmark – Blue and Grey
How to make a Chevron Bookmark out of Paper
You can either watch the automatic playing video tutorial or follow our steps!
Step by Step Harry Potter Bookmark Weaving Tutorial
In the meantime, check out these step by step instructions for making a paper chevron bookmark!
Time needed: 30 minutes.
- Cut your Paper Strips in Harry Potter House Colours
Begin by cutting our four strips of 1cm wide paper. Ours is approximately 25cm long – we cut the side off an A4 sheet of paper. Cut these as NEATLY as you possible can. We used a cutting board for it and it was quick and easy.
- Secure your first strips for weaving the bookmark
Using your glue stick (or double sided sticky tape), glue two of the same coloured strips together to create perfect right angles. We started off with yellow as this is hufflepuff’s main house colour!
- Add the second Harry Potter House Colour
Now take your contrasting colour, in our case black and also glue this down with a little glue. It needs to perfectly aline with one of the yellow strips.
- Add your 4 strip for weaving
Repeat with the second contrasting colour, this time securing this down perpendicular to the first black strip.
- Start Weaving
Now you are ready to start folding. You can simply (and quickly fold this….) BUT I like to add a little glue to every fold, just to secure the bookmark and strengthen it a little.
-
Repeat with the other side and keep going. Make your folds as neatly as possible.
- To finish the Chevron Bookmark Off
When you get to the end of your bookmark, secure the last pieces of paper with some more glue and trim off the edges.
All you need to now is cut out your Harry Potter House Badges as neatly as you can and glue down. Ta-da… your very own Harry Potter bookmarks are finished. I think they look fabulous and would make a great gift for Harry Potter fans!
